Square vs Cylinder

Out of curiosity, how come or what is the reason why skimmers cannot be square instead of a cylinder?

I think due to water inlet the circular shape of skimmer causes a nice easy flow of water. Seamless flow to say allowing mor water to contact bubbles.

or ETSS Skimers (downdrafts).

A lot of skimmers have square bodies but the neck and collection cup are almost always cylindrical/conical or a combination thereof
