I am new to this site and I would like input on how you would go about setting up a 90 gallon reef tank. So far I have purchased a pre-drilled reef ready 90 gallon tank, 4' Maristar ballast w/ 2 250W HQI lamps, (2) T-5 flourescents (including Blue Wave VII),
Model 7 Mag drive pump for the Precision Marine Protein Skimmer (rated for at least 200g), Model 9.5 Mag Drive pump for return, 40W Ultraviolet light, 30"x16"x14" (dementions; NOT gallon capacity), So far (2) Maxi-Jet 1200 (posibbly getting more?)

Some Questions I have
  • How many ponds of live rock should I incorporate? (90-100lbs)
  • What type of fish would you recommend that are reef safe and are suitable for 90g tank
  • Is this tank suitable for any coral (SPS, LPS, Soft)?
  • What is ideal water quality for reef tank? (akalinity, S.G, Calcium, pH, etc)
  • what type of heaters would you use?
  • Anything else you would suggest would be great!?
    [/list=1]

I am a young begginer in my teens and I have been studying about reef tanks for about 2 years.

Tho I think you would get more replies in the New to Hobby forum, I will help you out. Here is what I have in my tank at the time.
110lbs LR
Yellow tang, hippo tang (some would debate wether or not these 2 tangs have enough space in a 90 gal, mine have been fine for 5 yrs), orchid dottyback, six spot goby, maroon clownfish, cleaner wrasse.
IMO, you have plenty of lighting for almost any kind of coral. I would keep SPS near the top, LPS in the middle, softies on the bottom.

My advice. Do a lot of research, reading, ask questions before you do anything. Watch out for LFSs', they will try to sell you anything. Have lots of patients. Don't rush anything. Everything to do with reef tanks takes time. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, Welcome to RC.
