We're getting to start another reef tank, I would like to know how long it takes for a tank to cycle? I would like to not have to have fish in it to cycle. Is that possible? We are putting RO water, salt, aragamax sand, live rock. We have a sump and using a skimmer, heater, and planning on using broken dead coral.

Yes it is possible to do a fishless cycle, you can put a shrimp (from the seafood section of you grocery store) into the tank, that will start the cycle.

There's no set amount of time for a tank to complete its nitrogen cycle. But a few factors are: How large is the tank, how much live rock do you have, and what is the condition of the live rock (cured or uncured). You're definately on the right track by NOT introducing fish during the cycle, using RO water and a skimmer. Maintain your temp and SG and everything should be fine in time. Your best measure is to test No2, No3 and NH4. Good luck.

If you are putting uncured live rock in your tank do not use a shrimp or other such dead product in the tank. All you need is the live rock to start your cycle. If you are buying cured rock more than likely you will not have a cycle or if you do you will only have a small event that will be over quickly. You only need a shrimp or something dead like that if you do not use live rock.

Jonathan one of the moderators here will vouch for the shrimp thing, not a good idea.

If I can help please let me know.

Pat
