Still new to the hobby

pisanoal, sure you can get good LR and not have much dieoff. But it's also cheaper to get dry rock and not have any dieoff to worry about. Don't even worry about getting cured. Get dry rock and let it soak for a week in vinegar water with a pump circulating the water and then do a clean rinse in RODI water for a few days with circulation and then you can put it in the tank. Good idea to check the phosphate to make sure it's not leaching any out before putting it in the tank.

Just remember that all fish have waste in pee and poop and that is ammonia. It's not readable due to the bacteria that is in the tank.

I never indicated that his tank wasn't cycled. I agree that it is due to having nitrate readings without any nitrites or ammonia

Great input!!! This was the response I was hoping for when I started this thread. I have added a total of 26lbs of live rock since I set the tank up at my apt. Bought the LR from 3 different stores. All were in tanks and already cured. 2 of the larger rocks I added I know for sure we're in an established tank for at least a month as I saw them in the pet store a while ago. I guess someone locally shut down a tank because he had prly 600 lbs he said he all got for free from one of his customers. The older live rock already has coralline growing on it and the 2nd set of LR I added has a sponge growing on it that is a decent size. My tank is different though because it's really tall and kinda skinny so it's hard to find LR that is tall and skinny lol I've got 3 peppermint shrimp that all hang out in an upper corner of the tank and I've been trying to find them a tower but it's hard to find s rock like that.

I never order anything for my tank online unless it's a filter or something. The main LFS I go to is literally ten minutes from my apt so I don't know if that is even long enough for die off to occur. I'm gonna check all my params later today just to make sure everything is good. Also the wife would prly be ****ed if I had a bucket of vinegar sitting out for a week. We are kinda cramped in a 2 bedroom apt with a new born so I'm really limited on room lol

Completely new to the hobby about 6 weeks ago. I get on the new to the hobby forum about everyday just to learn. I got my tank from a friend who was getting out of the hobby. When I saw it, it was a 90 gal tank with 2 common clowns one 6 line wrasse and prly 3 hermit crabs and about 12 lbs of love rock running on one cascade 1000 canister filter. Sounds crappy I know cause like I said he was getting out of the hobby. I switched everything from the 95 to the 55 during a move. I did a 90% water change after the move and the same day I added another canister filter, a short spine sea urchin, 2 cleaner shrimp and a couple more hermits. Let it sit for about 2 weeks and added another 10 lbs of live rock, 3 peppermint shrimp ( for aptasia) and 2 banggai cardinals after I tested my water and everything was at 0. 1 shrimp and one Cardinal is all I've lost. Recently got a protein skimmer and it has been working well since the break in period and pulling good skimmate. Being still new to the hobby and learning something new everyday I just need someone or a couple someone's with experience to help me with questions. I'll prly ask a lot of stupid ones and then an explanation of why it works that way. I've done as much research as I possibly can and still I find something that makes me rethink everything I just learned. More or less looking for a friend to help.
