Stream Positioning

Roger,

As recommended, I've placed an order for a pair of 6000 Stream pumps with a 7095 multi-controller for my new, soon to be a reef, 225 gallon tank. And as per your suggestion, I'm going to place them in the back corners, angled towrds the front center.

The diagram below shows an overhead view of the tank and two possible pump placements...blue is mounted against the back wall while green is mounted against the side walls. In each case, the directional arrow reflects the approximate 30 degree swivel you indicated was possible.

So, which position do you recommend...blue or green? I'm guessing green, but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks,
Chris

I think green is better, a sharper angle like the blue line will cause the flow to diffuse when we want it to deflect and roll.

I have the same tunze on my 120 - you may want to consider 6100s - ask tunze and others.....

I would stick with the 6000 if it is mixed reef or LPS and softie dominated, 6100's for SPS dominated.

my tank is 48x24x28...center overflow..
wavebox is on the left side on the back.. my2x6100 point it across each others..
do u think i will be better of changing?

mike

I picked the 6000's based on Roger's recommendation, as my tank will be mainly soft and LPS for the foreseeable future. Perhaps down the road I'll go for the SPS, but that'll require some period of success with the "easier" corals first. I'll upgrade then if necessary, but it's not likely to be an issue for several years.

Thanks

well, i love mine and attribute my tank's health largely to the flow

remember, you can always throttle back the 6100 then just throttle them back up in the future as your needs change. But you can't "throttle up" a 6000 :)

True but I think it actually turns out a few cents cheaper to order a 6000 and the transformer upgrade to a 6100 than to just order the 6100. So actually it works out better to start with the 6000 and upgrade the transformer later when needed.

Right now I have my 6000 on the sides pointing towards each other rather than to the front glass. When I had them angled towards the front glass all my sand in the front of the tank got kicked up and I was left with a big pit all along the front of the tank. After it's been going a while I may try to switch back to the front glass angle.

Exactly my plan...upgrade the transformers if/when it becomes necessary.

As for the sand being kicked up, hopefully the streams will be at enough of an angle with the pumps mounted on the sides of the tank that it won't be a problem. But, I figured that might happen and will of course adjust as appropriate to remedy the condition. I just thought it wise to ask the initial question to get Roger's recommendation as a starting point.

Sparkss, I noticed in another thread that you switched to the magnet mount and in doing so it cut down on the noise generated. How noisy are these things?

Also, do you happen to know where I can get the magnet holders for the thicker glass? I've looked at Marine Depot, Premium Aquatics and a number of other places but they're all out. Looks like everyone is on backorder with them.

The backorder should be resolved soon, some places may have a few in stock in the next few days.

Thanks Roger.

Any idea who might be getting them in the next few days? Marine Depot is saying 1st week of November, but I'm hoping to get them sooner, as the pumps and controller will be arriving this Friday and I'd like to get everything installed over the weekend if I can...certainly don't want to wait a month if I don't have to.

Just about everyone will be getting them by Friday, the trick will be- who has some left over. Most were presold. More will come in as soon as I return from Germany, they said they have them ready for me but being gone I asked they not ship until a few days before I leave to return so I can meet the shipment here.

You can have Germany ship them to my house...I'll make room in my basement...minus one uint for my tank of course.

Send me an e-mail and I'll send you my address ;)

I just ordered 2 6000 and a 7095 controller today. I have mostly lps now but am trying my luck with sps currently. I am kinda worried that I bought the wrong ones from the sound of this thread. What do you mean that you can just upgrade the transformer to throttle up the 6000 instead of getting 6100's? I am totally lost with these products. I just ordered them today from a lfs and will be geting them tomorrow. Please clarify!
