Stringy white worms?

I have a friend that has some strange white worms growing in his tank. As he described them, "they look like white strings and build structures out of his sand". They also come out and "wave around like being blown in the wind".

He is also having a bristle worm army form under his rocks. He says if he lifts a rock there are clumps of them under there.

Any idea on how to control these and what the stringy worms are?

Okay, now knowing they won't hurt anything. Being it is that he as SO many. What are some things he can do go reduce the numbers of these worms?

they will probably starve in time. if he has a lot, that sounds like theres a lot of food in the water collum for them to eat. how long has his tank been setup?
