Substrate for a shallow clam tank

I will soon be getting a shallow (24" x 24" x 8") clam tank that you will be able to look directly down on. All it will have in it are clams, a few small pieces of live rock and possibly one or two fish that stay very small. I know I want a small sand bed - about 1 or 2" is what I was thinking. That's obviously too small to make a DSB out of, so it doesn't have to be sugar fine sand. I was wondering what you guys/gals thought would be the best substrate for this tank.

OT: Cheri, is that one of your clam(s) in your avatar? Looks awesome. Have any more pics of it if so?

Thank you - yes, that is my clam. He's decided to be un-photgenic lately by turning himself toward the rockwork, but I hope to get some wonderful pictures from above when the new clam tank is set up. This one is definitely my favorite clam! Wait a minute - they are ALL my favorite clams! :D

I never heard of Caribsea puka shells. I'll have to check them out. Out of curiosity, what was your reasoning in suggesting that substrate?

It gives the clam something to attach to but you can still seat the clam or move it. I use it for my holding systems. Adam
