I am trying to decide what kind of substrate to get for my reef tank... anyone have recommendations??

I personally like sand for a substrate. I have used crushed coral in the past and found it to be a pain to keep clean. Aragomite (oolitic) can help with nitrates if used as a DSB. Also it will help to buffer your water

Those are some notes I wrote on this topic. A shallow sand bed is easy and inexpensive to set up, and most people like the way it looks.
