That New Guy

New member
Good day; I'm currently using a Reefkeeper Lite. I currently only use it for feed mode, so I can turn off the pumps I want and leave on the rest while feeding or doing a water change.

My powerhead has a built in controller, and my light has a wireless app controller. So this brings me to my question... I want a way to monitor pH/temp swings throughout the day and night. I am hesitant to get a net module for my reefkeeper and I'm considering getting another controller instead.

For my needs, can anyone make a suggestion? I see that the Apex Fusion has a great GUI/web interfacing, but it seems like it would be complete overkill for my needs. The salinity monitoring would be nice, though.

Any other suggestions? I'd rather not spend $800 on a controller that does a bunch of stuff I don't need.

Thanks in advance!

I started with a reefkeeper elite and liked it and just switched over to apex. Yes 90% of people will say go with apex and im one of them. I have no experience with archon or profilux but Apex has been AMAZING. Keep your eye out on the fs section. Got a nice used one for $325

Thanks for the response. I'll most likely go with new, as I don't want to run the risk of getting a dud and I'm not really worried about the price, necessarily. I just don't want to waste $800 on a controller that does 700 things I don't want to do, when I could have gotten a $200 controller that does the 10 things I actually care about.

I think that once you have a full Apex you will be surprised at how many of those 700 things you don't think you need turn out to be useful. There are a few things the new Apex system does that would be nice to have like monitoring amps on each switch which can indicate when to clean a pump, but if you can get a good deal on the old Apex system that may be the way to go.

I voted for an Apex, because it is by far superior and generally easier to manage.

That said, your needs seem very minimal. If you are just wanting to track swings and the RK net module will do that? Then how much more would it cost? That's a decision that only can make.

Granted, if you end up with an Apex, you will have a lot more options in the long run.

I'm going to add another layer to this question...

Assume I'll eventually have another tank. I can't find specifics and I've searched! Will an Apex Fusion comfortably control two separate tanks?

I've done this before. Basically what you need is the appropriate probes for each tank. At times, you need additional modules in order to support the additional probes, it is very possible.

I believe that the brand new APEX has many more port options, so you will have to read up to see if you can get say, 2 ph and 2 temp probes directly on the main module. If you cant, you can always expand it with the supporting probe module (Just as you would with the old APEX's).

So yes, very possible.

I have the Profilux and find that it is easy to use. I am certainly not a tech guy so when I have a question I email their support staff. Vinny is spectacular at walking you through any and all questions. I'm a newbie so it really helps in monitoring my parameters. Good luck.

It's going to end up being an Apex Fusion. I'll be ordering it this week... But I'm still curious of others opinions. Keep them coming please!
