RC,
I am designing a new sump and have a question....

I am having an issue with my sump design... My skimmer needs about 9" of water and I would prefer to have more than 9" of water for my fuge...

Please advise.

I just used a rack made of light grate to keep my skimmer at the proper depth for operation if thats what your getting at...

If I do that.. wont fuge collect waste and my pods and other valuable things get sucked out by the skimmer.
Pods will survive the skimmer and your return pump. Waste builds up in a refugium no matter what. People fail to realize that you still have to periodically clean your refugium of detritus and waste no matter where it's positioned. My triton sump has the refugium then skimmer and finally return chamber.

The waste is what the cheato will uptake. And the pods will make it into the display. That's how I have mine and it works fine. My tank has tons of pods and misid shrimp

That's exactly how u built mine. My refugium is about 17x17x15
If your worried about waste you could always add a cheap power head in there. I have 2 power heads in my sump
