sump question

Hello,

I am buying a sump to go under my 55 gallon tank. Question is I have a few choices and not sure what to do..

1) As for the over flow, how many GPH do I need/want for a 55 gallon reef 300, 600, 800???

2) And what kind of return pump is best for this set up...

Thanks

Everything I have heard for water flow is 10 times your tank capacity which in your case would be 600GPH. I am running 1200 on my 180 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump and I think I could use more.

As far as pumps are concerned it depends on if you want internal or external. I like external due to the heat issue. You will add a small amount of heat to your water depending on the internal pump manufacturer though anymore I think that it is minimal.

You can get a lot of info from the different suppliers also. I prefer Premium Aquatics 1. they are reletively close to me and 2. they are very knowledgable and friendly and dependable and prompt. They also have a live chat line for question during the week.

I am using a GenX on my reef and then a small internal pump on the refugium on my 29gal clown tank and good success with both.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I actually just spoke to someone at dr foster. They said there is no need for a sump on a 55 gallon, (everyone has an opinion),. I told her the problems I was having and she said to reduce my feeding to every 3 or 4 days and she promises my numbers will be back in line. She has the same canister filter I have and has no issues. She also uses a sump on a similar tank and sees no difference.

The cheap way is to try what I was told and see if it works...
