Sump

I hooked up my sump to water test my tank and the baffles came loose. I used a silicon but dont remember what kind. What is the best stuff to use to secure baffles in a sump? And if it is silicone what kind of silicone?

well, is the sump glass or acrylic?

and what about the baffle?

silicone will only work if both were glass.

Going to have to disagree. All 3 off my glass sumps have acrylic baffles held with silicone --- the oldest being 7+ years old.

I used GE I silicone --- windows and doors. You do NOT want to use kitchen and bath, since there is an anti-mildew agent in there. Some have said that all GE silicone has that agent in there, but I don't know that for a fact.

go to hardware store and buy aquarium safe silicone it will say it on the side of the tube.

I got a cheap aquarium silicone from Mejier and held acrylic baffles on glass sump. Toothpaste looking white tube with applicator tip. Less than $10.

The instructions for my megaflow bulkheads said NOT to use any silicone. Have I screwed up or are baffles and bulkheads two different things? I am new to sumps and am just installing my first after 20 years of external canister filtering, so terminology is NOT my strong point.

Heck....I can't even figure out how to hook it all up, there were no instructions with the sump!

Yep, two different things. Bulkheads provide a water-tight way to pass piping through a wall or bottom of a tank. A baffle controls flow and water height in a sump.

Can only drill bottom if it is NOT tempered. You need to know who made the tank and what size it is to find out if the bottom is tempered.

You can disagree all you want, but it is a fact that silicone does not bond properly to acrylic.

You may have gotten away with it, but it does'nt mean it is the right product for the application.

I am not the only one that has attached acrylic baffles to a glass sump with silicone. I don't know anyone that he done it that way that had issues. And my baffles holding for 7+ years shows that it does work.
