sun coral?

So, I really like the sun coral, and I would like to add some to my tank. I need to know how mature a tank should for it to be safe for one to be introduced. Also, I need to know how often to feed them? Can they eat adult bs? Can they eat frozen blood worms? Can they be fed phytoplankton?

corals for the most part are zooplankton, not phytoplankton, eaters

i would not recommend feeding bloodworms on a regular basis to any salt water animal

i'd feed 'em anywhere from nightly, to a few times a week-they will also trap and eat copepods that develop in your tank

artemia (adults/nauplii), cyclopeeze, mysis, it's all good :)

I put mine in a small tub of its tank water as snug as safe without touching it and feed it mysis, quality pellet food, rotifers and even DT's Phyto. Everyone says they don't eat Phyto but mine did great on it alone until I expanded its diet. Let it feed for about 30 minutes.

If you don't have a lot of fish that will steal food from the sun coral, turn off your pump and then slowly target feed. It will save you more time than taking it out of the tank into a bowl and also it can get annoying putting one of those soda covers over it especially if you don't have alot of space.

try the bowl method. you can use rotifers and other micro foods this way. I put in 2.5 to 4 ml of food and let the coral eat to its capacity. Then dump any excess back in the tank.

I just got my sun coral a couple days ago, it isn't looking good though, the sides of the tubes are looking like they are flaky. It has very good color but I cannot get the polyps out for the life of me. I tried the bowl feeding, feeding randomly, it just will not open up. I'm a little worried about it because I read they must start feeding when you get them. Any help is appreciated.

I would start a separate thread :)

was it looking good when you got it? If it was then it should not be giong downhill so fast.:(

If it wasn't then thats a big bad on your part. One of the most importent things to do is get a healthy one to start with.

It was healthy at the store, but I don't know whats wrong with it, the polyps have totally receeded into the body of the tubes. And it looks like it's going white on the tubes, I'm worried. I don't want to take it back because it looks great, but I might have to tomorrow.

upload a photo for us to see. sun corals are not as difficult as people think to keep. I would target feed at first with some cyclops-eeze. I have a sun coral that I do not target feed. it eats whatever falls his way. good luck with yours

Get these suckers......they can grab mysis, etc very quickly and stuff it into their mouths. Plus they are open almost 24 hours a day!

Even direct sunlight doesn't make them close up.
