Survivability out of water (shipping problems)

In the past, I've always purchased everything from my LFS - a great store with decent prices about 20 minutes away. I finally decided that I wanted to branch out, and rather than have them custom order, I purchased from a well known online vendor (who will remain nameless for now) and had a shipping catastrophe.

I got paged by Fedex at 12:04, was home at 12:08 to begin acclimating, and as soon as I picked up the box, I noticed it was wet. I unpacked it quickly and found a bag containing a mushroom (it may have been a red bullseye - to be honest, I can't really tell) crushed and empty - its water spilled all over the rest of the contents.

I'm acclimating that one a bit faster than normal, as I imagine it's been dry for up to 18 hours (time of shipment) - my question is: what are the chances it's going to survive?

I also ordered 4 - four - zebra hermits just to get some into my tank - small nano, 24G, was quite surprised when they shipped 5-6 times as many as I ordered. They've found homes with a friend, but that was certainly not what I expected...

I'm gonna say chances are not good. Is it still actually alive? I'm surprised it would survive that kind of stress. I supose it is possible, tho.

that sucks, at least you got a few extra hermits :D

Way too many for the tank though ... they'd destroy everything. I finally counted - looks like they sent me about 24 instead of 4 (reading error? I dunno). Already have half a dozen, and as I said, it's a pretty small tank :)

I'm new to coral in general, been running rish only for the past 4 months, so I'm not sure. It's fleshy and kinda holding it's shape, but I'm hoping I'll know for sure by tonight. Only had a long lunch break to get things setup, so I'm hoping it'll show signs of life or death by the time I get home. It's definitely flat (about 1/8" inch) and flimsy, so I'm guessing it's probably not going to make it...

Have you contacted the vendor? Chances are they'd make good on the shipment.

I've spoken to them, and the response was along the lines of "try to acclimate it, if it doesn't make it, call us back" - I'm not necessarily worried about the lost money, I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time and polluting my tank...

Do you have a QT? You can put it in there and see if does ok. Then you wont be polluting the main tank. I don't think the pollution will be too bad provided you take it out if it dies.
