T. corcea

6-line

Hi all,
I just bought a 3 inch T. crocea and for the moment I have it on the sand bed, but on a piece of rock for it to attach to. How long for the byssal gland to attach? When I looked beneath it, there was no indication of a gland whatsoever. I have a T. deresa and I can see it's gland and it goes into the sand. When the clam attaches, I'll move it up; it was only under VHO's at the LFS, I have 2x250 watt plus 2-110 watt actinic over a 90 gallon.

Thanks

In my experiences it can take a little longer for crocea/maxima to attach. Mine have always taken up to 3-4 weeks to attach firmly. They rock he is sitting on make sure it lets him sit stabile and conforms to his shell. They will need to feel comfortable on the rock they want to attach with.

A actually saw the byssal gland out today, but the gap between the rock it's on and the bottom of the shell where the byssal emerges is kind of deep, IOW, it's not exactly a close fit between the two and perhaps the gland has to stretch too far. I'm trying to find a different place.
The clam also isn't opening as much as the ones I've seen pics of....perhaps maybe 60-70 percent open. It definitely reacts to motion and movement, maybe it just has to get comfortable with traffic before it expands with all it's glory? Am i correct in assuming this?
Thanks

Hi all,
today, approximately a week later, the clam is only opening maybe 20% and the mantle is wrinkled up within the shell. I moved it higher yesterday in an attempt to find somewhere for it to attach. Also, if you stared through the larger siphon, the oval one, not the protruding one, should you be able to see to ground beneath it? IOW, there's a gap there. I've seen the bysaal gland moving and the clam is still sensitive to movement. Is this fellow dying?
Thanks

You're right.
It's gone.
Thanks. Never got to see it's beauty. Maybe I'll stick to Maximas and Deresas. It didn't look fanatsic at the LFS, I figured it was because it was near the bottom in a VHO lit tank.
Guess not...:(

Overall, a bad couple weeks for my reef..

Sorry about your loss 6-line. That really sux. I wish I would have seen this thread sooner. Croceas are hard core light pigs. In your setup, right under one of the 250's at the top would best meet it's needs. Try another one, sometime, but don't put it on the sand. I think your results will be dramatically different. Peace.
