T5 HO lighting from sylvania and G.E. 54w are they safe for corals?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone, Im new to the hobby and was wondering if G.E. 48"HO T5 and sylvania starcoat 48"HO T5 both 54w are safe lighting for my newbie reef tank? I happen to have about 150 bulbs so im hoping lol...thanks for any help

It will depend on the color temp...it looks like the highest they come in is 6500K, with some down to 3000K. The 6500K ones would be *ok*, but it will be a yellowish light vs most marine T5HO bulbs which tend to be whiter. With actinic supplementation they would probably grow coral just fine, its just a question of aesthetics and what kind of color you like over your tank. If you have some, no harm in trying them out to see how they look.
