t5s vs. vhos

Are t5 lights and VHO lights the same thing? I'm thiking about getting some new lights but my tank will only support a max light length of 24". I've looked for some 24" t5s, but found the shortest ones to be 48". I know that you can grow SPS and clams with t5s, but will you be able do to so with VHOs as well? My tank is probably going to be about 24" deep and I'm trying to stay away from MH as much as possible because of heat issues. My new tank will be a 54g corner pentagon tank thats made of glass. I'm planning to install the lights into my canopy which will be about 10" from the top of the tank. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you.

You can get 24 inch T5. I am very happy with mine. With either one, you will need to put a couple of runners in your hood to put the lights closer to the water. T5s are much brighter than VHOs.

t5ho are quite different from VHO. they use less watts, make more PAR, last longer, and allow themselves to be properly reflectored.

thats all...;)

oh wow. SWEET!. can someone direct me to a website which sells the 24" t5s? Also, how high should the t5s be from the water? I've tried Marinedepot, Championlights, and Hellolights but I couldnt find them. I may have missed it though. Thanks!

You may want to look in to the VHO T-5.

About the same price as the HO T-5.

Call Custom aquatic, they are going to get some in soon.

you know, 3 months ago it was t6 that wouldbe the new king of fluorescents...

If i can melt many shrooms with my 3x39w retro of t5ho, I wouldnt want any more power...

Dont worry.....my guess is this just talk. It takes years and years and years for a lighting standard to take hold. T5HO is an industrial standard in Europe and is becoming really popular here as well and not just in aquariums.

You know Yu L Li is probably just confused about the T5 UV/URI bulbs coming out since URI is known for VHO.

The thing that is holding me back from going with T5s is that you can't get 72" bulbs. When ,and if they become available,I will go with T5s. Ted

t5s probably will never come in 72 inches because they break so easily. It has been discusses multiple times in the past and that is the answer I always see.

Can anyone point me to T5 VHO's I know Philips Lighting is adding an amalgam to their current T5 and that Sylvania has done it, but this is neither VHO nor very good for anything but commercial applications

Interesting. Anywhere that you can get these VHO t-5s? And any information on how much heat a 4x 21" would make?

me too...

RxBandit,

Yes, you will need a special VHO T-5 ballast. They are not very expensive, I think Custom Aquatic will have the kit or fixture both.
For the T-5 lover this may be a new lamp to play with. I try all of the Ice cap ballast, they did not work. So at this time you will need the special VHO T-5 ballast.
