Taking critters from the ocean and putting in your tank?

Have any of you ever actually taken corals/fish/live rock straight from the ocean and put it into your tank? just wondering thanks

Nope. Never have, never will. I only ever try to get corals and fish that can be tank raised. (fragged corals from other people). I guess it would be hipocritical to say that I have no impact on the environment. It would be impossible to say that and still be involved with this hobby. I just like to keep the impact to a minimum. Plus, there can be serious fines for such actions and you could introduce a whole plethera of things you don't want in your tank.

i dont think taking rock or anything else from long island beaches would be benificial for your tank...do a search for a user named Paul B, he will probably have some useful info.

I took those burrowing oval shaped sand crabs to feed a snake eel for a while. That's it.

i wonder if thoes sand fleas that live in the sand would live in an aquarium :D seems like they would keep the sand well oxygenated :P

ive been thinking about putting a sand crab in my tank. i dont think it would hurt anything if it doesnt just die right away.

I would, but the idea of spending the next few years in prison doen't appeal to me :D

There is NO problem collecting and it is totally legal if you follow the rules and regulations. I collect snails and hermits all the time, aswell as fish, zoas and certain soft corals, sea stars, urchins, ricordia, rock anemones, feather dusters, nudis and scallops. Never had a problem.
Can't wait for the water to get warm again!

my friend had a native tank for his first setup. if i was only to saltwater about 5years ago i would have taken pics. after a year he switched back to freshwater, i dont know y. but newayz he had a 120gallon with surfperch and king fish in it. he also had about 3dungeness crabs and 4 rock crabs. and he had this big pink star fish in there that we caught off the peir by luck i guess. we just pulled in the net and the starfish was in there. but all the fish and crabs in his tank were all from fishing trips to the local peir. the only thing he didnt get from the beach was the water and live rock but all inhabitants were all from the wild.

When I lived on one of the Islands in Alaska, I ran a cold water tank with things off the beach. I even had Baby Halibut. Shrimp bred in my tank. When I left, I acclimated them back. This was a long time ago and there weren't the laws like now. Never had anything die though. I got the water and sand straight from the Beach. No polution there. The Teacher in the little school would bring the students to see the tank.

No problem at all. As long as the water is clean and healthy, and it is legal. Here in Bermuda (700 miles off N.Carolina) we are not allowed to buy anything. You want a tank, you get your flippers on and go chase everything!
No problem in 3 years with any pest or disease.

Of course, much better to have someone scoop a fish or crab out of the water & ship it thousands of miles. Have it go thru stress, cold, heat, sitting in the same stinking water, acclimated to different water, then to your LFS & acclimated again, then you buy it & acclimate it again.

Yes that is MUCH better

WHERE do you think these things come from???

I'd do it in a heartbeat, much better survival rate IMO

GregT has Beaut of a French Angel in his tank that he collected
I'd be willing to bet he didn't use cyanide & took great care in his collection method

Do you sell the animals you collect?

Do you sell the animals you collect?

No I don't sell anything I collect.
But I do know people that employ professional divers with licences that collect for them for resale.

StoutLager, what do you mean by "we are not allowed to buy anything"? You have no stores there that sell livestock and you can't import either?

Correct, the LFS only carries freshwater stuff. Importing any saltwater species of anything is illegal, as it might get into the ocean and multiply causing environment chaos.

The LionFish is not native to Bermuda, or the Atlantic for that matter, but either somebody in SE USA let at least 2 go into the ocean or they got loose when a storm smashed an aquarium. Now, several years later they are everywhere and have very few preditors. So, you can see the problem with is humans.

Wow, that is interesting, so everything in your tank is collected by you then?
I would love to see a picture of your tank.
I have many customers in Bermuda and always wanted to come visit, just haven't had the chance yet.
