Tamron 2.5 90mm macro lens

I am fairly new to DSLR's having only owned the Canon 350 for several months. I have recently purchased a Tamron 2.5 90mm macro lens which from what I have read is a good lens for the money. It is a manual lens. I have taken a few pics with the lens but they are not comming out very well. I am not using a tripod. What setting should the camera be on to take the best macro shots?
