Tang Tank!

Hi,

In the planning stages of a 280 gallon tank. For stocking I was thinking 10 Zebrasoma desjardini, One giant Ritteri Mag on a pillar in the center and a few clown fish in it to host.

I already began planning for how I am going to provide a minimum of three
6" x 6" sheets of nori per tang each weak.

What do you guys think???

what are the tank dimensions? It seems rather aggressive, especially considering those fish can get over 12" in size (both length height).

If you want 12 of those tangs, yes I would think you would need a huge tank, maybe not 2800, but alot bigger then what you have.

Where did I say 50 feet long? But for a fish that gets over a foot long and a foot high, a 3 by 2.5 foot tank is not going to be nearly big enough -- IMO.

PJ, I had 2 desjardinis in my 400(7'x3'x30") along with 8 other tangs for 2 years. Lost the desjardinis last month due to stupid mistake on my part. Up til then , they behaved well in my tank. I cannot imagine 10 of them(all same species) in a 400, let alone a 280. Not to say it couldn't be done because I bet somebody has tried it but I'd be very skeptical. Do a little more reading here and elsewhere on tangs to avoid lost money and pain.

IMO, it isn't long enough for one of those tangs, let alone 12.
+1, should be at least 8', and as stated...will they get along with each other

Please tell us...HOW, in the world, are you going to provide all that Nori!:eek1:

No mention of the clownfish yet. The chances of more than one mated pair of clowns, any species, co-existing in your tank are quite small. Juvi clowns do fine together; when they pair off, they are the most territorial fish that swims. 280 gallons isn't too much territory for one pair to claim.

Haha good question.

I hope to make something similar to:

Maybe a few of them around the tank with yards of nori.

I may have to reconsider my tank dimensions...

Before nori was around, I raised a lot of tangs on softened greens. Turnip greens are a favorite. I still use them. Rinse & dry, freeze separately on a cookie sheet, freeze in a zip-loc, feed. Tougher than nori and very nutritious. I still feed nori, but other fish get most of it. I've raised several Tangs & large angels from juvi to adult, and kept them for years, with turnip greens as their main source of veggies. This post sure isn't designed to discourage nori, i think its a great product.

Why not just use those new toilet paper dispensers with the electric eye that you see in "upscale" public bathrooms (like Taco-Bell).

Because the nori would float on the surface of the water and be less attractive than a small sheet beneath.

But maybe that technology should be incorporated in the design somehow.

im with everyone else, 2 sailfins would be really pushing it in a tank that size, 10 tangs would be terrible in a tank even that big, probably more along the lines of 4-6 tangs depending on species and size in which they will acquire long term
