im a newby and im starting with a fowlr. i wont be ready for fish for a couple of months. i dont want to get damsels because i hear they are pest. i do like alot of tangs i see . can some of them go together? i have a 92g corner w 20g sump. thanks, gregg

Tangs are very territorial and a 92 gallon corner will not give them much space between fish. If you want to have Tangs add them all together and they should adjust to each other. I put a yellow tang, purple tang and sailfin tang into my tank at the same time 4 years ago and they are 3 amigos now. They still give each other a hip check now and again but it is more for show and not aggressive.

I forgot to add this: Tangs are the canaries of the reef tank! If something is not right with your tank the tangs will be the most sensitive to it. They are more prone to disease than any other fish in my opinion. But they are BEAUTIFUL!

If you are going to keep Tangs together keep them in odd numbers of the same body type; 1-3-5-7.

i.e. 1 yellow, 1 scoppas, 1 purple.

If there are even numbers of the same body type they tend to fight.

I have a hippo and yellow tang in a 90 gal. They have done really well for the 5 yrs. they have been in there. I wouldn't consider adding any more, tho, because there is simply not enough room.

PS- they are the best of freinds.

thanks for your help.some people say a 92 is to small for tangs what are your thoughts on that?

I'm not a tang-police...but a 92corner can take either a yellow, kole, convict, minic, purple, or a brown (scopa) tang.
Personally I would not keep more then 2 tangs. A corner does not have lots of swimming room.

Good Luck.

In my tank I have a Blonde Naso Tang along with other fish. I am wanting to add a yellow. Does the odd # of tangs apply to all tang types or to the species? I am asking because if I have 1 tang already do I order 1 yellow or 2 yellows which will give me a odd #.

The odd number rule is less of a factor the larger the tank gets. I think with a 150 gallon, assuming it is 6 feet long, would probably be O.K. but you never know. I have a 2 1/2 inch six-line wrasse that will chase and bully ANY fish regardless of size or species. Go figure.

Since it is too late to introduce together would it be okay if I added a yellow tang that is smaller than my Naso?

If you can't add them together change the rockwork to confuse them and give them a nori clip with a good size of nori on it. That ought to keep them busy. :D Michael R
