Tank Brand Quality

Looking at two 120g tanks, an Oceanic and an AGA(All Glass Aquarium) and there is a HUGE price difference, both are "Reef Ready" in terms of overflow and drilling.

125g AGA (72x18x22) - $490.97
120g Oceanic(48x24x24) - $632.99

About the only difference is the Oceanic comes with a little more hardware in terms of the overflow system.

Is there a Quality difference between these to makers??

I have found that the Oceanic tank is the "Cadillac" of tanks however check how thick the glass is for both tanks. That may be the only difference as both have warranties and both will work..

aqua - I've heard that too, just wondering what the quality difference could be for that price gap. Trying to find info on glass thickness.

xfactor - nope those are just the tank and guts.

Slurpdog,

I think you should look more into the dimensions. If you plane on setting up a FOWLR, the 125 gal dimensions might be more desireable then the 120 gal. While for a reef tank the shorter 120 gal would probably have a more appealing look and allow for greater concentration of light. The Oceanic has nicer trim work, they are both owned by the same company so workmanship shouldn't be much different.

I think i want to do almost a combo of the two, lots of LR at either end with an area of LS in the middle(rock tappering down towards the middle. Figured the greater dimension for the 125 would make that look cool.

patience and diligently watching the selling forum will get you a tank for 1/4 the price. Of course, it'll be used.

I was also looking into the Oceanic, but unfortunately here where I am at sells perfecto. BTW that price is the tank only price here.

Because of that, I was also wondering about the glass thickness, I am looking into pricing to build one myself, but I am wanting the 105 show tank from oceanic which is 4' x 18" x 28 1/2", it's either that or something with the same base footprint.

Do you have any ideas?

I am an avid owner of both AGA & Oceanic. I purchased my Dream Machine August 2003. It is an Oceanic 175 Bowfront RR System. And yes, there is a Major price difference. Both brands are actually made by AGA. Oceanic is considered as stated as the "cadillac" of them. It is made of super duper thick glass (which makes it extremely heavy). The seal is thicker and tougher than AGA. It also has clean black seals (instead of slight greenish seals found in AGA). If price wasn't an issue, I would have all Oceanic. But, b/c of the upgraded quality in glass thickness etc, it makes the Oceanic extremely heavy. It took 3-4 guys to carry this onto a cargo van. And trust me, my husband is 6'1" & 245lbs and solid muscle!!! He gave me an ultimatium: They moved it to one place & one place only and that's IT. Once it is there: It's there for good. Imagine w/ the Sand, LR & Water. I must admit, I've Never had a problem out of either brand. The only reason I purchased the Oceanic instead is b/c AGA does not make a 175 bowfront only up to a 155 bowfront. I fell in love with the 175 Bowfront System displayed in the fish store...the rest was history...I had to have it.

Part of that price difference is that you're pricing two different size tanks. You can also get an all glass 120 w/two overflows which is considerably more expensive than the all glass 125. That being said, Oceanic is a much heavier tank with thicker glass, but I've never had any problems with all glass.

I also have both AGA and Oceanic tanks. You pay for what you get. The Oceanic is verrryyy good but (IMO) a little over engineered. You should not have any problems with either.

I have never had a problem with my 55 perfecto since i bought it 10 years ago :P Apparently i's very very lucky.

That is, until i tried to drill it. FYI. only the side glass is NOT safety glass.

I think both are fine, I just bought a perfecto RR 120 becuase I like the overflow in the corner. The newer, bigger perfecto tanks look rock solid, are cheaper, come with all plumbing inside the tank, and did I mention they are cheaper.

For those that don't know, oceanic and AGA recently implemented price increases, The stand I got that would retail for $400 before, now retails for $650 and looks like it is made out of cheaper materials. If you want oceanic quality, and old oceanic prices, look for Deep sea aquatics.
