Tank of the Month - January 2008

WOW what an awesome set up! i have 2 questions. How much did it cost to set it up and How much is your Light bill every month?

Vinnie- I've pretty thoroughly covered many of the operating expenses and set-up expense in the other thread and briefly mentioned it in this one.

Thanks to everyone for nominating this tank. I really wanted things to grow in and mature before making it public. I also wanted the extra time to perfect the set-up so others could model it(if they want to) after it was thoroughly tested and proven. I took two years testing equipment and configuring it to the point that it is simple and proven. I also feel that the 140 gallon refugium could easily be taken off-line as far as filtration goes. The Volcano skimmer from Aquatic Acyrlics easily handles the demand of the tank. In fact after that skimmer was put online I slowly took off the UV and Ozone with no change to the tank.

Where is the other thread?

Energy, can you describe what you use for flow in such a large tank (pump types, cl's, powerheads, etc)? I don't remember reading much about this in your threads, many thanks

oh, and if you did it over, what would you change?

this is the most disgustingly insane tank ive ever seen...almost makes me wanna cry..in a good way of course....definately the nicest tank i have ever seen, not only on rc, nicest tank ive seen anywhere....nice job man, congrats

That tank should be "Tank of the Year"!

Awesome job.
it would be cool if they had tank of the year. if reef cnetral had thead and then had everyone vote on which tank of the 12 tanks that made tank of the month for that year, should be tank of the year, it would be a really cool thing to have. we might have to send skipper some emails and see if he will go for that. lol sorry skipper if im casuing you trouble.

hey i read almost all the replys which r located on 3 different forums i kno alot of reading(good thing im a fast reader) and i noticed about ur algae problem u got snails, emerald crabs and sea hairs which r all fine but have u ever heard of sally light foot crabs, in my mind they would be so much more better then the emeralds and u would love how fast and efficent they r. just adding one u would notice him hard at work lmao and they r pretty too=P just my option i think they r more peaceful then the emeralds anyway.

I like a lot of folks on RC have followed this tank since it was first posted some time ago. I'm glad to see that he has been selected as TOM!! What an amazing job and a great benefit to those of us that would one day like to have something similar. Ok maybe not that big but you know what I mean! Congratulations it is very much deserved!!!

Thanks again everyone, I use a lot of different pumps for flow but mostly Mag 18's inside the tank like big o' powerheads. Really with such a long span I needed something with more direct flow to move the water along the entire 15' span. The wide disperal area of the Tunze didn't work that way.

On another note I have been getting some requests from people offering there tanks up to be included in the book. This is wonderful and I appreciate people that are willing to volunteer their systems for scrutiny and review in the pages of a book. We may be looking for a few more good, big tanks. If you have one or know of a tank that is unique, or just plain cool and at least 450 gallons please let me know. If the tank makes it into the book the owner must be willing to submit and share quite a bit of information and have pictures as well. Remember the idea of the book is to completely break down and describe in detail each tank so others can learn and work off from those ideas. Thanks Again everyone.

Hi Energy,
I wonder if you could speak a bit about your skimmer. I was trying to figure out how a skimmer that big could consume only 190w. Does this mean you are using only 1 dart NW pump with 1 alita to forcefeed?? or does this skimmer come with a spazz special pump. Also noticed the flange at the bottom of the skimmer body. is this to facilitate cleaning?

Awesome It really does look like the ocean, now if I could only hit that LOTTO. I'd be calling you and Spaz to build me one just like it!
