Tank overflow

Looking at tank overflows must they always be so wide in the back or can I build one the lenght of the tank?

It depends on how much flow you want to run through it.

I figure the sump fuge will be 30 gallons and the tank is a 30 gallon cube. I read that it should be 3 to 5 times going to the fuge but not sure about the sump. If this is true I figured 10 gallons for the fuge section flow would be minimal max 50 gallons. As far a size I don't know if elbows and valves have to be considered. I would say I can use multiple drain pipes in the overflow box.
