I have a fluVal spec 5 with live rock and a clown goby. I wanted to make it a lps and soft coral tank but my temp hardly ever goes under 82. I live in a apartment so my only option is to turn off my living room heat. No thermostat. I took the heater out of the tank because the high temps. Is it safe for lps and soft corals?

You can have higher temps (low 80s) but the higher the tank temps, the more sensitive the organisms will be to high swings. It's always preferable to keep a tank at a lower temp (77-78) because if you swing on occasion to the low 80s, you are less likely to lose as many organisms. With temps in the low to mid 80s already, you have almost no room for error. If you can't keep the temps from going higher than that (chiller, fan with top-off, etc) I wouldn't keep a tank there.

how is the air conditioner in your apartment. i used to live in an apartment that the landlord controlled my ac, my 55 gallon tank would get up to 84 85 in the summer . So if your ac isn't that great, i would stay away from lps and soft because it wont take much to raise the temp in a 6 gallon tank.

I just moved my tank this morning to the other side of my living room. Without even realizing my placement I put my tank in between 2 of the living room heaters. One is covered by my couch so I didn't think about it at first. The wall that the tank is in front of is super hot. My tank temp is going down. It's at 80.5.....hopefully it comes down to like 78-79. Seems to be the average most people keep their tanks. I don't even need a heater imo but I still have one, just not in the tank at the moment.

i would keep the heater in the tank. it cant hurt set it at 78, it should never go on but you can use it as a safety backup. also if your using the cheap them buy a new one to double check the temp. not saying its wrong, but i do know in the winter my apartment isnt 80 degrees good luck

Thanks. My temp is at 78 with my heater set at 78...The move helped alot...Its really warm in my apartment but it was a bad place for me to place the tank where it was. With the couch there covering the heater I didnt even think twice bout the spot. My tank was in front of a small wall that was in between both heaters in my apartment. Even that wall is very hot.

I ran a tank at 82 for over a year, not by choice .I had a Red Sea max. Having upgraded and running at 77.5 now I get much better results than I used to, but then again quite a few things have changed. It is possible, but if you can get it cooler , I would.

Cooler is better. Stability is the key to success

Too much for just a 5 gallon. But its stable now. Temp is locked in at 78-79.
