Tap water

I am not a fan of tap water. I discuss my concerns in this article:

Tap Water in Reef Aquaria
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/jan2004/chem.htm

Raw artificial salt water (especially if made from RO/DI) can be stored as long as needed because there are no organics in it to degrade. I keep it for weeks in an unstirred plastic trash can. Used tank water and natural seawater may need aeration to store it as the organic materials in it will degrade, and it may become anaerobic, potentially producing hydrogen sulfide.

Do you keep it closed with a lid? It seems that after about 3 days the water I store has a smell to it. Same with just plain tap water, after a few days it smells. I do keep it closed with a tight lid.

It smells kinda like the sea. I bought brand new 5gallon buckets to use just for that. When I fill them, they don't really have a scent but after a couple of days it just kinds of smells old. Not really rotten though. Should I use the water then.....

How about treating it with the chemicals? ones that remove chlorine or storing the water for 24hr before using for top off?

I'd use the water unless it smells of hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs).

If you use tap water, I'd check to see if it might have chloramine in it. Waiting to use the water will not help if your supply uses chloramine.

>It smells kinda like the sea.

Why would that be a bad thing?:p

9well, I guess it depend to what 'sea' you are comparing it to :p
