I just picked up a Tear Drop Maxima from a LFS down here.

I know the problems people have been having with these particular maximas and I want to start an online log right here on this thread, in which I will update the health of this maxima weekly for the next 3 months or so.

The clam appeared to be in exceptional shape, extended mantle, highly re-active to movement above it and best of all, rock is attached at the base of the clam. The rock in which the clam was attached on was chipped away around it.

Also, this clam originated from Bali, not many clams or corals are collected from that region.

Anyway, Here are some pictures I just took during acclimation...

First pic, Check out the rock the clam is tightly attached too. The threads are all strongly secured and grasping onto the rock, no damage whatsoever:

Second pic, Here he is in the acclimation bowl, slightly opening up:

I've always wanted to try these guys, but have been reluctant, I figure this is my best chance at one. I got a good price on it too so I figured what the heck. Only time will tell.....

1) Very healthy
2) Collected from Bali
3) Completely secured and attached to rock

Now if this clam dies, forget it, no more Tear drops ever again.

Let the games begin!

Dat, I actually got the clam from Reef Collection. I don't know how he does it but victors been importing some really weird stuff from Bali lately. He's got these croceas that have been chipped away from the reef, they are buried in the rock. Very weird, I actually took some pics of those but I have to find them.

This clam is a good fat 4 inches. The mantle is very unusual, I've never seen a clam like it. It has the teardrop coloration, with a few teardrops but most of the design consists of weird circular patterns.

Just hope the darn thing lives.

Good documentation.

Good luck with it!

I almost bought a 6" from the solomons. Im pretty sure you know who has it, the price was right too (under $200 for me). I want it real bad, but Im so low on cash right now, have to use it for my insurance:(

LOL, Anyway, I might try to get one again in a litle bit.

Make sure you give us lots of updates! Maybe a shot of it in the tank? That would be great.

John

Hey John, Erik from AquaMarines has some in stock too. Good prices I think as well. Honestly though I don't think you should spend 200 bucks on a clam that you don't know will live or not. Barry from clamsdirect has one in his personal tank. Let his, and mine as well, act as your 'test' clam. If ours lives past a few months then go ahead and splurge. Go ahead and get your insurance now, lol.

Teardrop Clam

Congratulation project reef on your new purchase. As long as they were collected properly they should survive. I have 2 of them at the moment. I've own one them for a year and the other one for half a year. One was collected on Solomon Island and the other one was from Fiji. I've attached a photo of the Clam that came from Fiji.

That's great to hear Lukan. I'm very glad yours have been doing great, hope they continue to thrive, knock on wood.

What's wrong with the tear drops? I mean what kind of problem does people have with them?

The ones coming from viet nam where ripped off the reef and their byassil filament and foot was often damaged. Therfore, after a few weeks (at most) they would die.

Their is a new batch of these coming from the solomon islands, and hopefully these will do better. IMO they will, as many of them are attached to rocks, therefore, the collectoion methods are probably pretty good.

Ali- LMK what Mangrove Tropicals says:) PM me.

I am glad to see that yours is doing well so far. I am buying this one from Reef Collection now. This is a picture from them...I will post a pic when I receive it and put it in my tank.

I have been looking for one for some time and have had little luck. If anyone can direct me (private message please)to a shop that would be willing to ship or online vendor that has one in stock I would greatly appreciate it. I am also in search for a blue squam too!

I did talk with the guy that bought a 7" tear drop from clams direct and after 2 weeks at clams direct and almost 3 weeks in his tank, it is doing great.

Barry at www.clamsdirect.com had 3 other small ones but I wasn't fast enought to order one.. All gone. :(
