temporary holding tank/container

This weekend I'm hoping to drain my current tank and get the new one setup. What types of containers can I use as temporary holding tanks for fish/coral/rock? I'm hoping that the temp containers will only need to be used for around 10-14 days while the new tank is setup and goes through an abbreviated cycle.

I've read that rubbermaid brutes are a popular option, but I've only seen them in garbage can form - I'd prefer a something more like a storage tote. Will a regular rubbermaid-type tote leach anything in a relatively short timeframe like I'm looking at?

I use a 18g tote from value for my water changes. That might help for corals, theyre cheap and come in clear, blue, pink, etc.

Tough call. I've seen everything from kiddie pools, to coolers, to pond liners, to rubbermaid storage bins, to old tanks etc... If they hold water and have never held anything other than food safe materials, you can use it.

What about one of those 25 gallon red rubbermaid buckets with rope handles that people use at parties to hold soda and beer, namely kegs.

Cool... if i can use totes then I'd just assume do that. They are cheap, easy to find, and i can repurpose them after the new tank is up and running.

I use the totes and sterlite bins. The later are a bit sturdier leak wise. I just wipe them down inside with some vinegar and rinse them out to remove any manufacturing residue as a precaution.

I would not recommend a tote for holding water. I had water in one overnight when I was upgrading from a 90 to a 125. The next day, walked in on a tote with a collapsed wall, and salty water all over my floor. Rubbermaid Brute is the best choice in my opinion.

I have a 30L with stand just sitting here if you’re interested. Use it for as long as it takes to get the new tank up and running.

Hmmm... i may take you up on that. Be nice to have another set of eyes look at my planned system too.

Thanks Dave. Once I get my sump built I'll shoot you a pm and we can go from there.

Yea another set of eyes is always a good idea. Not sure if I will have anything to offer but it's always nice to see other plumbing setups and maybe I could even utilize some of your ideas for my future build. From the looks of it you already have a solid plan for your plumbing.

Your welcome and sounds good whenever you are ready.
