hi there iv just upgraded from a red sea prizm to a deltec mce 600 both are hang on or in sump models, but boy the deltec working well and i just wondered what is the best hang-on skimmer ?

the other ones are all lower performance than those two. 2 factors really define the quality of a skimmer. the quality of the pump ($$$) and how well the pump works with the skimmer body it is attached to. deltec has a great pump so it is the best hang on. that is also why you paid so much. alot of others have crappy pumps so they just dont skim. alot of people build huge diy skimmers, but they arent that good because the skimmer body is an inappropriate size for the pump(s) they used. Maybe the best skimmer out there is the bubble king. It uses a red dragon pump which costs 1000$ by itself. Since a good pump is so important price very often does dictate how good a skimmer is. The coralife superskimmer on the other hand has a rio as a pump but its body is very well designed. Many hang on skimmers have a terrible body design that results in horrible performance like the prizm :) . The farther a skimmer body deviates from ideal proportions the less it works. enjoy, you got the best.

Deltec is supposed to be the best I don't own one or know anyone who has one that I could view the operation. I have a turbofloater multi and it is the best skimmer I have ever owned.

IF YOU HAVE A DELTEC HANG-ON YOU PAID FOR THE BEST SO YOU HAVE THE BEST.

That isn't entirely true.

Remember the poster is from the UK. The UK Deltec skimmers are far inferior to the US versions due to the different pumps used.

There was a guy from the UK and hated his Deltec MCE6000 and ended up swapping it out for a Turboflotor whcih he said worked better.

IMO you should look into a Coralife Super Skimmer. Some say it works better than the Turboflotor and IMO definitely better than the Aqua C Remora

deltec is the absolute best. for those of us who dont have or dont want to spend that much coralife superskimmer is the next best.
My thoughts too.

CSS seems to have knocked the Remoras out of the top spot for HOB skimmers - and it's about time there was more competition in this area.

If you have the money though, Deltec is in another league. I'm just not sure the price difference is quite equal to the difference in performance.

dhnguyen, I would NOT buy a deltec when I get a sump going I am going to buy a MRC what do you think?
(Sorry kind of off the the Forum)

I haven't any experience with the MRC but have heard from alot of people that they work really well. Only thing is you need a fairly beefy pump to run it.

And the nasty skimate

One thing to remember is all skimmers seem to pull different things out of the water. My seaclone pulled thicker skimate then a remora that a friend had however when I broke it and bought the turbofloater multi I saw the difference in foam immediately which proved to be a great improvement as all negative algae problems disappeared in 3 weeks. So Just because the skimmmate looks nasty it doesn't mean nothing. How the tank looks tells you if it is doing a good job.

I would say this skimmer did its job, I use to have algae problems bigtime, ever since I been running this skimmer since sept 05 the algae problems disappeared, water is crystal clear. I use to run a remora pro, coralife super skimmer and it would take 2 weeks or more to produce the skimate my deltec hangon makes in 5 days. I really wish the collection cup was a little bigger though but I am surely happy with it.

i thought the big thing was about the pin wheel in the deltec a better pump would be nice but may not increase the bubbles thats what i noticed right off so many very fine bubbles as pictured above

The pump that the deltec hang on uses is the aquabee 2000 which has been modified further by deltec to pull in even more air and produce many smaller bubbles. Its like a milkshake when you see all the bubbles this thing produces. The smaller the bubbles the better. Check out the deltec forum many other users can help you answer questions about your skimmer.
