Im toying with the idea of putting a 45 degree elbow on the end and hanging it like a normal maxijet would mount. Do you guys think it may cut too much on the flow?

yeah i meant 2'.

i dont think the maxi could handle the head pressure that the elbow would create on it, well you could also just drop down in prop size until it will spin it

I really like that idea... can move the elbow in almost any horizontal direction. If you do that, please let us know how it goes...

I read through this whole thread and built one of these maxi jet mods yesterday. Someone mentioned in this thread that they lack tools to build one. I face a similar problem - I do not own a miter saw nor even a dremel. So the following mod can be built by anyone who has a pair of scissors and a steak knife. The pump is an old maxijet 1000 that was sitting around.

I held it my tank and it ran fine. The flow was incredible. The stopper and bracket is still drying from the glue. I will take a few more pics when I have the mod running in the tank.

By the way, the photo isn't so clear but I think your propeller is placed on backwards. You will get better flow if you point ir the other way

And for those looking to do this but lack the tools to do so. Here are some very CHEAP rotary hand tools (works just like a Dremel) that you can use. In fact I use one and the best part is you can use Dremel bits on them too

Thanks for pointer D. The propeller is positioned with the notches facing away from the pump. The convex side is facing away the pump now. You think it should be the other way round? I'll flip it around and give it a try

Yes the notch should be pointing towards the pump. This is also how it is suppose to be mounted on an RC boat.

well got my glue issue worked. I put 2 of these in my tank and can see a real big diference in my corals. they love the flow . for example i have a branching hammer with over 35 heads on it about size of basketball or larger and its on 1 side of my 90 gallon tank . the flow is soft enough that it didt retract inward like it has with other powerhead. i have the mj900 right now with singlew dummas props and am going to try out the nitros and maybe dual dumas props and see howe it goes. also have these on a wavetimer and fish are loving it . great thread here has saved me alot of dollars.

wont you get better performance if the sides of the prop are in a shroud, similar to the tunze housing. i would think that the water would simple take the path of least resistance and blow off the outer edges of the prop rather than being forced out the shroud

Just loook different due to the material used (SCH80 dark gray pipe used instead) mostly for cosmetic purposes

ok well i got the groove cut and put the 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe on . my problem is there is about a 1/4 inch of play. the round part of the maxi jet is a smaller diameter than the inside of the pipe . how do you deal with that to make sure it doesn't move and you keep the prop shaft centered ?

That's why I used a 1.5" SCH80 pipe
The ID of the 1.5" SCH80 is a near perfect fit of the Maxijet.

Either that or add a 1.5" PVC test cap

i am unfamiliar with what a test cap is and how it would apply to this project. when goggled 1.5" PVC test cap came up with these

Look at the photos posted by schprock above. The white bottom part is a test cap used to attach onto a Maxijet. It is a near perfect fit.
