That is sweet, I wonder where one of those motors can be found?

you can find similar ones in airconditioning units. used for air swing mechanism.

Ok I got my Octura propellers today. These things are AWESOME. One 2035 1.4" propeller easily beat the dual Nitros. And super quiet as well.

Bye bye Nitros. HELLO Octuras :D

Hey dhnguyen, what color is that one? my LHS has a bucket full of the octura props, but with no label/packaging. They are used as test props for boat racing.

I guess I'll forget about finding the nitro's for my other kit.

For some reason I couldn't get my brand new mj900 to turn the 1.75 dumas. I even tried mounting the prop right to the impeller, less resistance. Oh, well I'll have to make a trip back to the hobby store. where the heck do you get time for all the playing, ha?

P.S. dhnguyen, when I first started reading your/this thread you had 1000 post, now you have 1600, WOW!

Yeah I've seen that Christmas snowman motor mount mod. It's a cool idea but the one I posted is much cleaner and looked easier to do.

2035 is orange
1435 is brown

2040 is light green/olive
1440 is brown

Couldn't get the Maxijet to spin neither the 2045 nor 1445. Too much propeller for a Maxijet I guess.

Where can I buy these Octuras? Oh, and BTW, the rotating powerhead mount has been done a few times before. der_wille_zur_macht has a slick one here...http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=728866

When in Atlanta at a LFS, they strapped two SEIOs onto the sides of the outlet pipe of a Sea-Swirl. Now thats some flow!

You can order them here
http://www.funrcboats.com/category.aspx?categoryID=109

or contact Octura directly. The only thing is they have no email nor website so everything is done via phone or mail.

If you get them for use on a Maxijet I recommend either 1235 or 1435 propellers for MJ400 and MJ600

MJ900 and MJ1200 you can go a bit bigger with 1240 and 1440 props.

dhnguyen, you have to scroll down to the pic that der_wille_zur_macht posted...thats what Im talkin' bout!

So let me clarify & thanks for the link... So as of now, these Octura props are the best ones you have used?

Whatcha think of those 3 blade graupner props?

Yeah I saw what der_wille_zur_macht posted and IMO the other one I posted previously is still cleaner since everything is contained in a box whereas this one is way too exposed.

True, but that box is big. I had a design I was waiting on the motor for. The motor was mounted on the outside of the tank attachment bracket, and outside of the tank/canopy. Then a 4" pushrod did the work inside the PVC pipe bracket. Simple, cheap, and minimal bulk. Ill post a pic later.

ok so i was able to build the pvc part pretty well and i was going to order the props and rod today but i have a question. it seems you are recommending using one 1.75" Dumas prop rather than the double 1.25" props you originally had. my question is how do you use a 1.75" Dumas prop when the inside diameter of the of the pvc is less than 1.5"

You can't fit the 1.75 Dumas into the 1.5 PVC - that's the caveat :) You would need to build a larger shroud for it. I used a 1.5 PVC slip coupling for the shroud's main body and the SCH80 1.5 PVC for the grooved end.

Keep in mind the 1.75 propeller will put out A LOT of flow and you may not want that much in your 90g.

I am actually no longer using the dual 1.25 Nitro props anymore as I found the Octura propellers to be much more efficient and quieter. One 1.38" 1235 Octura prop puts out as much if not better flow than 2 Nitro Hammer props.

So if you can, get the Octuras.

I have had a lot of requests lately of people wanting to know what the latest parts list is. So here it is my own parts list of what worked best for me. Feel free to chime in.

The shroud:

Schedule 80 1.5" PVC pipe (dark gray if you order from mcmaster.com) for the 1.25" up to 1.4" propellers

1.5" slip coupling for the larger 1.75" Dumas propeller

The propellers:

1.38" Octura 2035 or 1435

1.57" Octura 1440 or 1240

1.75" Dumas

Everything else:

0.098" carbon fiber rod or 3/32" 316 stainless steel welding rod.

3.16" thin walled rigid airline tubing.

Flexible airline tubing.

CA or super glue

Cross brace: Can be made out of 1/4" thick scrap acrylic, 1/4" acrylic bars, or rigid airline.

Just a thought

I'm thinking that the section of tube at the edges of the propeller should be solid and not vented.

"Ducting" the prop should increse eficiency. Of course I'm only an electrical engineer and I've forgotten much of my fluid mechanics...so I may be wrong.

rivan-

I did that at first but I noticed that it didn't make any difference on how much flow whether I left the shroud longer with more ducting area at the end versus the shorter shroud.

What I DID noticed though is that the shorter shroud has much wider flow pattern.

here in minnesota all the lowes and HD have Schedule 80 1.5" PVC pipe but its in the electrical section , not plumbing . they have two types , make sure to get the thick one.

thanks for the update of the parts you are using , where can one get the Octura ? maybe we could update the original post with what you are now using and where to get them .this thread might be less cluttered with questions and people won't need to read through 50 pages to find the handfull of posts with pertinent information on how to build your first.

anyways thanks for your idea and all of your help. i hope this project works as well for me as it has for others : )

OK here goes the list again this time with where to get the parts :)
