the male flame wrasse thread

hello everyone.
Im doing a little personal research on male flame wrasses.
After researching a bit on RC and other people i've noticed a continuing trend on how male flames do not last longer then a couple months.
Symptons:
is doing great for a long time, eating everything. then one day is breathing heavy not eating, the next he is dead.
I have had mine now for almost 7 months now and hes going strong.

among my research i stumbled across a parasite that hosts only in flame wrasse of hawaii (i know flame wrasse are only found in hawaii :))
But for some reason they only effect the male in a negative way (these symptoms do not apply to the female) Treatment with PraziPro is suppose to cure the male from this parasite, but i have yet to find anyone with personal experience using it.

Another theory is the use of a needle. Most flame wrasses are needled one way or another. They are found (usually) at 100 feet or below and would take a long time to decompress naturally. however, this doesn't explain why some make it and some dont...

SO, I would like to hear from personal experiences on how long you have had a male flame, if you have ever owned a male flame, how long did you own it, and how did it die if it did.

I hope we can all learn a little something about this, because its frustrating me to no end :)

i thought they were hardy fish? ask hiroki tanaka on the flasher wrasse thread he's an expert and author on wrasse

justdave is the user who told me of the trematodes and their prazipro cure.

He said that they are more and more common on all fish from hawaii not just the male flame wrasse.

they are hardy to an extent. I've just be hearing they fall dead all of a sudden. Mine is doing well so far but its only been 7 months.
Ill start treating all my fish with prazi pro in my system. see how the flames turn out then.

If the flame has lasted 7 months I would think that you are out of the woods. I have heard 6 weeks and then they are dead. If I remember correctly you got a female with yours maybe that is the key. That and not letting trematodes kill them.

Gadget if you could swing it I would get a female too. Twilight aquatics has both in stock according to their website. He is the one that goes and gets these guys and I would put more trust in him than anyone.

I purchased a jordani pair from brian. Had them about two months now. Eating very well right from acclimation. The male is about 5", the female about 2". They definately hang out together. If this helps the males health is subjective i suppose. I will mark the thread and let you know how mine progress. The male was extremely shy for the first few days, but now is as bold as any other fish in the display.

they are a spectacular fish.

It is such a shame that people are having the problems with the males (myself included).

I got mine!!! I ended up with one male and a female (as suggested). They are both eating mysis and brine, though the female is still a bit shy. I have had them for about a week. I will post pics soon.

I'm at the 8 month mark with my 4.5" male flame wrasse. He recently came down with ich, apparently due to a recent upgrade to a bigger tank. Along with the ich, his stomach seems to be getting thin. He has also become very picky eater, used to accept everything but now all he wants is mysis.

I'm going to take him out and treat with prazipro in a 15 gallon tank. I've been feeding the tank so much that all my other wrasses are extremely fat but the flame is the only one not putting on weight. My 4" female flame wrasse is doing great and she is very fat.

Wish me luck,
Steven

I have bad news as well. I lost the female a couple months ago. My male is still going strong, but I need to get a couple females to replace the one I lost.
