the Strong Museum of Play

The new and improved (air conditioned!) Strong Museum of Play has opened in Rochester and it's a must see for anyone living in upstate NY that has kids. (Adults will like it a lot, too. Allow at least two hours if you don't have kids. If you have kids allow a full day!)
The new 1,000 gallon acrylic reef aquarium is still in it's infancy, but it's now up and running. (Note: I had nothing to do with setting this one up!)

Another attraction is the newly set-up butterfly conservatory.
Here's one of the many Morpho butterflies that can be seen flitting around the visitors.

I want that tank next.... Beth may I have it ? I have been a good boy all year (and I thought my 220 was heavy) lol I will have to check it out in about a year when the tank matures a bit.

My wife has taken our kids to the Strong Museum multiple times and they all love it. I told her I want to go, so we will likely plan a little one day road trip in the next couple weeks. Maybe I can swing by one (or more) of the Rochester LFS.

Yeah, the new exhibits are very nice. I like the 1st one w/ all the exhibits for the kids to play. I think mine spent 20-minutes in that tilted distortion room. Just running laps and laughing. Can't beat that. The family membership was the best Christmas present we could have gotten.
I believe someone said CF is doing the tank at Strong? We're hoping to maybe do some 'pruning' at SP once she gets a little more stable. Have to see if the two organizations can work things out. I'd really like to see their tank built up w/ all captive raised corals as well, but... I don't hold out a lot of hope (one can dream tho!)

What do they have in the tank, looks like some chromis, and a clown is there anything else that you cant see from the picture?

There was a colt coral all shriveled up when I was there a week ago, few 'shrooms... but the tank is very new, so it will take some time to settle in.

That room MUST be experienced by everyone. I'd urge everyone to check it out and try not to laugh or get dizzy when walking into it. What a freakin' trip! :wildone:

I took my youngest to the Seneca Park Zoo and the Strong Museum of Play today. (Going for 'Dad of the Year' award...)
There are two new reef tanks set up back-to-back in the museum. (I think they were 180's). One is a clownfish/anemone tank, the other is a predator reef. There's currently a harlequin tusk, a clown trigger, a boxfish and a couple of puffers.

The 'Rainbow Reef' looked pretty good. It seems as if there's always different fish in there when I visit. I saw a Siganus doliatus there that was huuuuuugge, Rochester; HUUUUGE.

I couldn't help but notice that the acrylic really scratched up.

As always, the Zoo aquarium looked great. My 3 year old daughter loved to look at the books and find the corresponding specimens in the aquarium. She also noted if there was something there that we have in our tank at home. (That's my girl!)
