The Southern Maryland Marine Aquarium Society (www.smmas.org) is proud to host the Third Annual Southern Maryland Reef Symposium featuring noted speaker and author Anthony Calfo* on November 10th, 2007. This event will be held at the Calvert Marine Museum from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm located near beautiful Solomon’s Island Maryland. The pre-registration admission fee of $25 ($10 for students 12-18, $4 for children under 12) is available until October 26th; ticket prices increase to $30 thereafter and at the door. Included in this price is admission to the Calvert Marine Museum featuring wildlife from the Chesapeake Bay, a petting area of rays, interactive displays, as well as the history of the Chesapeake. Check out their website, www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for directions and all the activities that are available.

The doors open at 10:00am; check in at the front desk to receive your Reef Symposium passes and admission stickers for the museum. Tour the museum and enjoy the “saltwater” tank displays of the local Chesapeake Bay (who knew seahorses lived in the Chesapeake?), there is so much to see and do here you may want to join the museum and come back again!

There will be plenty of food for everyone as well as one of the best Marine Aquarium raffles in the state; sumps, skimmers, lighting systems, gift certificates, it’s all going to be there! Vendors will also be on hand selling live coral as well as dry goods at very reasonable prices.

I'll be including this info on the Upcoming Events page of the next issue of Reefkeeping Magazine. :)

Thank you for doing that for us.

here is an update.

Anthony Calfo will be doing a lecture on the subject "Things You Thought You Knew". A comprehensive reef-keeping discussion covering hardware and husbandry with an address of the many common mistakes newbies and experts alike tend to make. After our lunch break he will conduct a workshop on how to save damaged coral, a video camera will be set up so all can clearly see what he will be doing on stage. Cool huh?

Also, the Raffle prizes are starting to come in... MH sets, a custom made nano tank, protein skimmer, salt and more salt, GC's... the list is growing. We will update the raffle prize pool more often as the 10th of November draws closer.

This is going to be one great show folks, please buy your tickets as soon as you can so we can get a good head count for the food folks.

We will also have 3 vendors on hand, 2 wet and 1 dry. Our 2 wet George from CMAS, Jeff from Reef Chief, and our dry vendor, GetTankedAquariums.

Tickets are on sale now. $25 for adults and $ 4 for Children under 12. You can buy them at our site or at the door. Please remember if you buy them at the door, the adult price is $30.

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY COW!!!

I just got a phone call from Tullio of ARAD, they have just UPGRADED their donation to the SMMAS Reef Symposium to their top of the line, 400 watt MH set up with their newest smart ballast!!!! This system has built in diagnostics for trouble shooting and will even tell you when it is time to replace the light bulb. He called it their Cadillac of their new line of MH lighting. How cool is that?!?!?
