The Ultimate Arduino Reef Controller

I don't post often as I'm based in the UK and www.ultimatereef.net (UR, your brotherly site across the pond) is my homesite, but regularly read the RC posts over the past 8 years :)

So, looking for someone who is capable of driving collective insight/intelligence to the greater good. I posted the following on UR

We have a HUGE range of talent on UR, with specialists in just about every area. Would be great if we could combine our intellect and skills for a common good to create the ultimate open source Reef Controller.

Much of what is required already exists, it now requires consolidation and a programme to optimise requirements and Costs.

Would be an ideal project for an Undergraduate or anyone else that has the time and passion to co-ordinate and focus on the project.

IS there anyone who would be prepared to run this project on UR and control co-ordinate via GITHUB ?

To make this REALLY fly

we would need as a basic..

Project Co-ordination Group to manage github and collect prioritise requirements/submissions
People to contribute R&D time to refine/define the code and hardware used ( Certainly lots already doing this for LED's )
Ideally, access to an acrylic fabricator or someone with a suitable CNC/3D printer for any custom parts.

To Get started I would suggest we use:

An Arduino Mega (A flexible and current card with a lot of existing projects in this field)
A 3300 based Wifi Card ( A Web interface to Control makes most sense, everyone has a laptop, phone or Tablet)
A 3.2" TFT ( Great For standalone mode and ease of testing)

From my very limited experience ,these seem to be a good foundation for successful Arduino controller projects, i am sure whomever drives this will quickly get the inputs to drive it through to a decent conclusion

A sticky could be used to gather all contributions and share ideas

SO please raise your hands if you think it's a worthwhile/worthless idea and especially if you can take control and can passionately drive this forward

anyone here think they can take on the task and drive this on a globally collective basis bringing together all reefers to one agenda?

If there is one place this can be done, then this the place ( we are a little reservist in the UK, unless it involves nudity and frolics and an orange stuffed in ones mouth! :) hence my post!)

There are so many excellent posts in this area on RC and other international forums, it would be rude to single out specifics. So in short, MODS and the passionate, get your finger out and make this happen, now is the perfect time!

You know who you are, step up, drive the process and make a real difference:beer:

as a few thoughts to get the process started, a core forum and sub forums that address the below would be a good start!.....

We should essentially be looking for a holly grail controller that has the logic to assist regardless of the system that an individual operates

Have made a finger in the air first cut of the categories that would ideally need a thought leader/moderator to drive and refine

Monitoring
Level 1 (Constant Probe Monitoring with appropriate Calibration)
Temp Monitor ( Core Water (heaters and chillers), External Environment, Sulphur reactor + others?)
Ph Monitor ( Calcium reactor and Kalk Dosers and reverse lit refugiums)
Conductivity Monitor ( Driving auto top-up, 2/3 part and Triton ( A German Inspired method) )
MV/Orp Monitor ( to drive nitrate reactors, Oxygen reactors and carbon reactor)
Humidity ( to drive extractors and dehumidifiers to protect local environment)

Level 2 (automated titration, AKA Virtual Mindstream, Seneye Etc)
Alk Monitor ( Calcium reactors, Kalk Reactors, 2 part, Triton e.t.c)
Phosphate Monitor ( Phos reactors, Nitrate Reactors, Carbon Reactor/Dosing)
Nitrate Monitor (Nitrate Reactors, Carbon Reactors/Dosing)

Lighting
LED Controller ( to massive to get ones head around unless you are a groupie, recommendations appreciated!)
PAR Meter ( Lamp replacement, Coral positioning aid)
Light Mover Control ( Drives the likes of a LightMover used in hydroponics)
Probably alot more in this area!

Feeding
Food Doser
Dry ( Drives the likes of an eheime autofeeder)
Frozen ( A little more complex, but you have some great diy examples)

Dosing
Peri Pump Controller
Drip Controller (low volume accurate dosage)

Mechanical Manipulation

Relay Controller Board, Lights, Solenoids, pumps, e.t.c

Bipolar Motor Controller ( For flow control with a needle valve)
Pump Controller
Tunze
Ecotech
DC Derivatives (Boyu e.t.c)
AC Derivatives ( the majority)
Wave Controller ( no idea !)

Auto Top Up Controller ( Salinity Stability, drives top-up from ro or saline reservoir)
Automatic Water Change Controller ( No Idea!)

User Interface
WIFI/Ethernet Controller ( Maybe bridge to a YUN to get the Linux benefits, initially standalone will be easier?)
LCD Interface ( what's the best display for the cost/function, Interface designer provides core input)
Website Interface ( Needs a Web designer with a fifth sense on ease of use, cater for browsers, tablets, phones and cloud)
Core Interface Designer ( a god with a view into everything, this is the core that ties all things in and drives the above)

Component Control Logic (Uses a combination of the above, but provides the logic control, based on best of breed principles)

Calcium Reactor Controller
Nitrate Reactor Controller
Sulphur ( based on Orp and N driving flow)
Carbon Driven ( based on N and P driving dosing)
Triton 3 part (?)
Zeovit (?)
2 Part Ballling (?)
3 part balling (?)
Kalk Reactor ( Based on ALK)
Phosphate Reactor (Based on P and N)
Carbon Source Nitrate Controller
Pellets/Pearls ( Based on P and N , controlling flow)
VSV derivatives ( allowing for dosing of 5 sources, based on P and N ?)
Activated Carbon Controller ( Based on Orp?)
Skimmer Controller ( Air Volume and Wetness control and Auto Feed to Drain)
Probably missed a few and they need some form of prioritisation

It's a great way to bring the collective thought together and define a new dawn. ( which as I post, it is a new dawn in the UK!)

good night , over and out, time for an orange or two.....

Seeing as I have been getting more and more frustrated with the controller I have now, this is a project I have actually been thinking about. While I have the programming skills and enough experience with a soldering iron to be dangerous, I would love to work on a project like this. I don't think I could do the management, but am more than willing to join up with the group.

Wow, surprised in some senses but not in others. I guess with where we are that community projects are too far charity/selfless orientated and people need substinance!

Respect to the Likes of Trovalds,Barragan and Cuartielles none the less, it's a shame communities do not follow their exemplary example, but understandable in a 'sponsor' driven scenario.

maybe, another day :)

Check out doughboys controller in the DIY forum. He has a controller that does most things an apex does and he has the code on GitHub
