the unofficial 100 millionth fmas sand thread

That's what the short guy who ran this place said to many of us for similar reasons? that's about when they went out of business.
They closed!!! Oh the horror...... :deadhorse1:

Sorry to jump on your thread, but what is the best source for the reef flakes? Recommendations for # of pounds to put in the 20?

There is a place here in Miami on north river drive on the river that I am going to check out today called Dandy sand I passed it yesterday and I saw what looked like agronite sand. Will pass by and check the silica levels in the sand. Will let you know. For the first tank years ago I did not listen to everyone tell me not to use beach sand but I did. Everything was okay the sand looked brown when I got it but it is whit under lighting. That tank is still running 3 years later with no problems. I am Upgrading to a 150 and I am looking for sand. The problem, for me is that I am on a budget. My Chief Financial Officer(Wife) say's I have so much. So I have the choice of buying live sand and not using my old sand that I have almost 200 lb on my 90 right now I have 4 to 5 inches deep of, or buy a wavemaker

So using the sand from the beaches here is fine then? I'm a student and on a pretty tight budget as well

ASk wetdiver! He used sand from a local beach and his tank is beautiful. The problem is a lot of the sand in the beaches is not natural sand but crushed rock full of silica. If you can go in a boat and go a few miles out you should be ok. I used mud from a local park where there were lots of mangros in my fuge and everything is ok too!!!!!

Reefers, i'm using Dania Beach sand for 2 years now and I have no problems. You have to make sure that is strained (you can use a spaghetti strainer) to get all the junk out off it then rinse with fresh water and BINGO you have all the sand you want.

Nice Tank WD! Proof enough for me!

That sounds easy... just not sure how much silica my sand here in Deerfield beach has...according to my Oceanagraphy professor the sand from Florida reefs are 50% Mg Calcite and 50% Aragonite?

Shouldn't be much silica in the sand around here. No rocks to have been ground down to sand, it's all limestone around here. Besides, even there was silica sand, it isn't a problem.

Cool! Thanks for clarifying that Bill I was just repeating what an angry midget who sells recycled aquacultured sand told me.

doesn't look that brown... what do you guys think? Seems to be staying down nicely with as much flow as i have.

This are really old pictures because your rocks are completely covered with zoas now

I know you have to come to the house and take a good picture of my tank with the lens you got.
