I just wanted to see what peoples thoughts and experiances are with a Hawiian Dragon...I am thinking about getting one and I am concerned about it eating its tankmates...
never had a problem with them eating tankmates, but i am not "stupid" like some and put clowns, firefish, cleanershrimp etc in there with them. big angels tangs, puffers, and mild triggers are all appropriate tankmates.
eh no guaruntees. if the maroon looks like it ccan remotely fit in teh dragon moray's mouth kiss him good by.
and eventually the dragon moray will get large enough to eat him.
i suggest setting up like a 29 with a pc eclipse top and put hte maroon and her anemone in that tank and get the eel, they are worth it!
We had one of these guys at work, he was quite well behaved with his tankmates, though everything housed in his 110g FOWLR was over 3-4" long. He also came with a hefty pricetag ($1899.00CD), but sold fairly quickly. In the couple of months we had him I got pretty attached
I got this image from a Google search, just to show the eel I'm referring to since it looks like there are a few species referred to as 'Hawaiian dragon eels'. Pic is from www.thepetstop.com.
if you can get one small enough (14" or less) The maroon will be fine for a long time if not the whole time. Dragon eels are actually shallow water eels. If the maroon stays in the anemone for most of the time, i would give it a 95% chance it lives. Dragons are actually pretty passive (in the general sceme of things- there are some exceptions)
I would say go for it. They are gorgeous eels
I have several small damsels in with my Hawaiian Dragon and he never goes for them. They are too fast for him actually. My Japanese dragon on the other hand eats everything in his path. I am able to keep very large sergeant majors in there with no problems.
As for sharks, they have the same teeth structure as stingrays and really canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t do any damage to the eels with a few bites. The eel would have to sit there and let the shark gnaw on him for a while. You would be fine with a shark with him. I would be concerned with the 4' length he shark gets though. Get a coral cat shark if you want sharks. They only get to 24-27" at best.
