Thorny Oyster

Spondylus rotundatus - Thorny Oyster

I have found that the typical habitat for them are rocky sea beds at depths of 6 to 8 feet. They are typically found off the coast of Isreal and are commenly colleceted by divers and resturaunts. Knowing where they are in the Ocean would suggest that they would be in a warmer tank and would be able to sustain a fair amount of current.

They get to about 2.8 inches in size which is common.

I couldn't find too much else on them. You may want to research the Medditerian Ocean specs (temp, salinity, etc.) for a better match to the environment.

I was doing a search and found this thread. I wonder if you found out any more info on there care?
I just got one thru a trade.
I have it placed in a shaded area of the main tank. I know its a filter feeder and I will be able to provide nutrition for it. Just really wondered about lighting, life expectancy, natrual habitat, etc.
TIA

the thorny oysters that i have come across are the deep sea atlantic thornys. they like lower light levels, and i have personally grown one to 5 in in diameter. being lower light they need regular feeding.
