Thats awesome. I take it this is a fairly accurate way to sex clams?

Cal,

Really don't know cuz I'm assuming you really can't see sperm LOL. I guess if I could see them then they must be eggs :p

Haha well I meant if they're tiny white balls, then your clams a female, and if its white and cloudy, well yea  . Anyways cool deal about getting photos, when my crocea spawned he didn't last long enough for me to get pics:lol: .

My smaller clams probably lasted only 30 minutes but man this one was going at it for over an hour - was getting me worried cuz of all the pollution it is causing. The skimmer just went berzerk :eek2:

Here's a macro of when I was taking shots of these zoanthids ;) and you could see the eggs nestled in some of the tentacles. Wonder if the eggs are being eaten:

Yeah I think so. Wasn't maybe 15 minutes after you left. Man the 1st squirt scared the sh*# out of me and it was so poweful it banged the pendant with water way above it :eek1: :eek2:

Awesome pics John.

Actually, clams are hermaphrotides. They mature as males at about 2-3 years and mature as females (while still being functional males) at about 7-10years depending on species and individuals.

ok, that is TOO freaking cool man. shooting water above the tank???!!! how far below the water is it???

John that is nutty! Fantastic pics man, what type of camera are you using? SweeeeeeeeeeeT.

Ali,

It's just a cheapy digicam - nikon 2500 believe it or not. It's pretty darn good especially for closeups. Bought it for my wife over a year ago but I've hijacked it quite a bit from her LOL.

Firechild Thanks,

Lunch its about 6" from the surface in a 16" tall tank. Yeah this tank can't really hold this puppy but be rest assured :p its gonna go in the big daddy tank (360 gallons) when it's up.

Sometimes when it closes up it wets a power strip about 2 feet away from the tank and trips the circuit LOL. I had to shield the sockets to keep it from killing the whole tank.

SWEET!!!!

I never realized clams were that powerful. What kind of things were you doing in the tank that you think provoked this?

i knew that they were that powerfull... if i move or put my hands near my big one he some times gives me the water jet treatment so he knows that i know he is still there...

Man yeah you don't want to be sticking your head over big clams unless you're asking for it :D

We were transferring over some fragments from Bruddah's tanks. All the commotion must have irritated it somehow.

Don't think Barry at clams direct would mind but I pulled this picture off his forum where he talks about one clam starting the spawn then it was like a chair reaction.
