Titan Trigger Info Needed

Hello All,

I am setting up a 300 gallon aquarium wiht the main purpose of getting as large of a single fish as I can. I want something with alot of personality. I really want a fish that will get in the 20 inch range and I like the trigger attitude. I have been trying to decide between an Umbee (fresh water cichlid) and a Titan Trigger. Any background/advise on the trigger would be great.

I have kept aquariums over the past 15 years and prior to moving had a 110 reef, deep sand bed set-up. So, I am not the most advanced hobbiest but I can manage.

Thanks in advance

You are correct in that a titan is a single tank specimin. Some say 300G is fine, others say 500G. They do get big.

They are hardy and adapt well to captivity. They eat a lot and can even attack your arm or hand if you don't pay attention.

Queen Trigger, Blue Line and Clown are in the same category, but maybe not as agressive.

A large queen triggerfish has tons of personality, beauty, and size. They also grow alot faster and are quite a bit easier to find than an adult titan. It would be very, very difficult to find a large (10" plus) titan. Juveniles can definitely be found, but they grow so slowly that it may be awhile before it fills out your 300. gl

I would agree with the queen for its color and personality. There are also very large Atlantic grey triggers often for sale through the right wholesalers. My friend has a 12" one that he got for about $30. The queen is prettier. The titan does grow very slowly and doesn't have the colors that the others have. I have a 5" blue line and it grows fast and has the personality to boot.

I took this pic at Marine World Northern California.

If you search around you can probably fine some place, like Marine Center, that can get you a good size Titan trigger, probably in the 8"-11" range. It probably wouldn't be cheap though. Just be careful with what you pieces of rock or cured coral you place in the tank because these large trigger do liketo pick up and drop the rock in the tank. Also some of the larger trigger will actually bite at the silicone on the side of the tank.

There is a titan in an Atlanta LFS for $250 named "Diablo". TONS of personality but a real SOB when it comes to mangling tank decorations. They have just given him some dog toys and other stuff to play/interact with and that seems to of helped alot. He's quite a cool fish who has been at the LFS for almost a year. He's about 10" or so now.... If you are interested shoot me a message.

Hmmm...Biting at the silicone? I would guess that would possibly be an issue with any big trigger if that is correct. Has anyone ever had a fish cause a leak in their tank by bitting the silicone? I hae never heard of it first hand but I guess it could happen.

It can happen with any large trigger, not just the Titan trigger. Iv'e never had it happen to me but a # of people I know have had it happen and not just with the more aggressive trigger. One of my friends had a large Black Durgen Trigger that kept biting at the silicone and he had to get rid of it. I guess a lot has to do with the tank size and what else is in the tank to keep the trigger busy. I know a lot of people have problems with trigger biting heater and power head cords.

Just putting it out there as when you get a very large aggressive fish I think people need to take everything into account just so they know what may or may not happen.

I already bought the glass tank and have seen the damage a large fish does to acrylic. I am sure if the trigger bites the silicone I am sure he/she will gouge the heck out of the acrylic. I have never heard this to be a concern before as I am sure other fish like Puffers would also do the same.

Anyone have any first hand experience with this? If so it might change my mind on getting a trigger and just get an Umbee or something

i have triggers and i havnt seen them do it, but what i would do is see if you can just put something in each corner of the tank to block the silicone. maybe you could buy 1"x1" acrylic or plastic blockers. just a thought... you may want to look into psuedobalistes fuscus (blue line trigger) as they grow to about 20" and are extremely aggressive in captivity. titans do max out at 3 feet long. i dont think a trigger could cause a leak anyways by biting at the silicone. one they get large enough to do major damage, they wont be able to reach their snout in the corner because they are so wide.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. That once they get big it would be hard to get a good bite in the corner. I will look at the blue line as I didn't know they get that big. I do want something in the 20inch range and I read the Titan gets 24 inches. If it gets 36 then that is too big for a 300.

Thanks and anymore info would be great

I have a mere 5" blue line and it snaps at the glass all of the time fighting its reflection violently. At 36 inches, I'd be afraid of the teeth of a titan breaking the side, and god help you if it decides to ram the tank. Hope you have a wet/dry vac!!!
