Hi reefers :) ,

After having my 20G DIY nano for 3.5 years , it's time to move up .
I barrely can put my hands in my nano anymore , due to sps colonies that are expanding :spin1:
This is a picture of august so corals are even bigger.

1) making the frame for stand

-The first thing a did was buying me square tube 2" x 2" , i even had to cut the angles myself , with an 9" handgrinder :headwally:

picture.php

Then i spot welded the upper framework measuring 50" x 25 "

picture.php

picture.php

when everything is spotwelded it's time to weld (i arc welded it :bum: ) the "heads" and "backs" of the corners , quickly changing from the head of corner to the back of that same corner to reduce shrinking/ bending effects

picture.php

When all corners are done like that , it's time to weld all up and down face cornerwelds .

picture.php

now with the upperframe welded it's time to spot weld the lower frame

picture.php

picture.php

it's time to grind ...

picture.php

picture.php

now i fit the vertical support tubes that connect the lower to the upper frame..

picture.php

picture.php

picture.php

raw frame done welding the measurements where very positif all within 1 mm in the horizontal plane (the most important) , now final check by dad ....

picture.php

now i fit the supports to hold the inside wooden panels

greetingzz tntneon :)

Now it's time to degrease /grind some more and finaly paint the frame with 3 layers of paint.
one primer layer and two finish layers :

....

after a busy week for me , the paint was realy dry and hard.
This was the moment where i glued on the rubber insulation under the lower frame work.
The lower frame rests on my tile floor , it is fairly straight that floor but some minor height difference you always gave so that's why i want these rubbers on .... :D better safe ;

My mother and daughter checking my work , it's a family thing :D

picture.php

Then it was time to move the frame from the barn of my father to my place where i could mount the inside wooden and already painted panels.

after the glass panels arived , i turned my stand into an working bench with an temporary surface for gleuing my sump

picture.php

degreasing / sanding and masking up the glass panels

picture.php

so tommorrow i'll post the pictures of the gleud and dryed sump ....

thx guys :) ,

Now it go's fairly quick , but i still have to order the glass for display or maybe gonna order an already build one.
Because gleuing 1/2" thick and 50 " x 25 " big glass panels is not an easy thing to do IMO , i just finised gleuing my sump who is 30" x 20" big an 15 " high , and that already gave some weight and security issues , when doing alone.

And also i have to order a 3" thick 60 "X 30" granite tablet that's gonna rest on the stand.
Which is gonna take more than 4 weeks to fabricate and deliver .
Also real gey oak panels for the sides and grey oak doors will have to be ordered as well....

I'm hoping to move fish and corals in somewhere in the spring of 2012 :)

Thx Ksed and Nautifishy :) ,

-The way the stand looks now will be different at the end of the build .... the panels you see now are the inside panels these ones i fabricated myself , they are good (for inside) , when not looking from too close by :) .

-The final outher panels will probably be grooved oak color wengé , it's gonna be in the same color and material then the new living room furniture i'm also gonna order soon... , gonna be an expensive winter :hmm4:

hi reefers :) ,

2) gleuing the sump

-Last weekend it still was warm here , with the glass panels already arrived earlyer , it took the opportunity to gleu my sump.
I have used 8 mm (1/3 ") thick float glass , my sump will be measuring +/- 30" X 25" and 12" high .
-friday evening i already degreased and masked up the panels , then i had to construct something to secure the panels after i gleued them .

I came up with the following constrution

picture.php

very thing went well , but it would been much easyer if i could go round the workbench / stand , witch i couldn't .
When gleuing bigger / more heavy panels you have to lower the workspot and be able to go around your tank doing this.
A friend or 2 been able to help , would also be intresting :D

after glue dryed ...already the hart is in place :)

picture.php

This pump red dragon 6500 v08 will been doing the return work and feed the carbon and gfo reactors.

picture.php

Today i ordered the glass baffel plates 1/4" , that i'm gonna gleu tommorow into the sump....
