Toadstool leather HELP!

So I am currently going on a year in the hobby and have now run into a problem with my toadstool. Can anyone tell me what this might be.

About 3 days ago I removed a smaller leather toadstool out of my tank to put in another, when I pulled it out a little bit of its foot was still stuck on the rock. Within a few minutes my larger toadstool went completely closed. At first I though it was shedding, but now it has a brown layer over the top of it. Currently the brown layer is almost like a light cellophane wrap over the top. I used a turkey baster and blew some of it off. Could anyone tell me what this might be?

Also just in case this matters I originally had a sand-less tank and just recently put in new sand about a month ago, which is going through a diatom cycle currently.

Thanks for any help.

should be fine as long as its not rotting....could just be ****ed off...don't move it around leave it alone and give it some good flow....

+1, Toadstools can be quite temperamental. Just because they aren't open doesn't mean they are hurt or dying. They also do shed a layer of "slim" regularly or when stressed. Like Gary said as long as it's not rotting it'll be fine. I had a few frags in a tank that was under a rabbitfish's new found taste attack and were closed for over a month. I eventually moved them all into my seahorse tank and the next day they all opened up just fine.
