Too much heat

How much heat are a Mag 12 and Mag 24 suppose to generate? I have them in my sump. the 12 is powering the protien skimmer and the 24 is my return pump. My tank is heating to between 83F (night) to 85F(day). Is this normal? do I need a chiller?

IMO that is too hot. What kind of llights do you have? Before you invest in a chiller you could try removing the glass top of your tank and using fans to help dissipate the heat

Too much heat

The tank doesn't have a glass top and even with the lights off for 12 hours the temp only drops 2 degrees (83F). Should I consider replacing the Mags? How much heat is normal for a submersible pump?

The mags generate a lot of heat which is contributing to your heat problems. If you are running metal halide lights, then that is another source of heat. Your temps are higher than they should be by several degrees. Get you some clip on fans and place them over the sump if you have one and if you have the MH's in a closed canopy over your tank, you can place some computer fans up there. I placed a small 10" box fan on top of my sump where the return water is held and it works like a charm. Tank temp stays at 79-80 as opposed to 82-84 without the fan. Water evaporation is a problem that I am dealing with because of this, but I am working on getting an auto top off to cure that problem.
