Too much live rock for 5 gal mantis tank?

hobbzz

How do I change this?
I'm going to be getting a peacock mantis for this 5 gal tank. I just noticed that there isn't much room for it to run around on the sand. It would have to crawl around/over the rocks most of the time...would this most likely make it UN-happy? Should I remove some rock, or try to re-arrange it, to create more surface area on the sand?

The tank looks good. I would try and do a search on mantis and how someone else set up there tanks for them. I know Ive read here about people setting up Mantis tanks. Did you get the mantis yet? if you did, post some pics.

Not yet...my lfs is going to call me when they see a peacock on their lists. They say they usually see them once a month or so...:)

I just bought a mantis and I have him in a 30 gallon. I think a 5 gallon might be to small for it when it gets really big. I would try and get a bigger tank. And I would try to make him a tunnel, they get stressed out in the open.

i dont think that its too much rock, my peacock spends most of its time in his tunnel anywayz. he deffinately needs a tunnel though, if your sand bed is deep enough he will make his own, or you can get a pvc elbow and put in there for him. i would definately consider a bigger tank for him though.

I agree with the above few posts, a peacock will definetly outgrow this tank. Try ang get a smaller one because it doesn't look like he will have much room to move around since the rock is taking up most of it.

It looks like a lot of rock to me. I have 1/4 of that in a 40 gal.

I'm going to be getting one that is 1-3 inches. Then when I run out of room for mushrooms, zoos, and such, I planned on going to a 10 gal...and trust me...I'll run out of room for that stuff faster than it will be able to outgrow the tank!:D

I guess I like the looks of it, I'm kind of talking proportion wise. I have 3 rock in there. One huge one and smaller ones to the sides. My mantis is a small variety, but he travels the whole tank, mostly up in the rocks
