Trigger Fish Bloating

I have a blue jaw triggerfish in a quaratine tank that I have been treating for ich for about 2 weeks. He has been eating very well and the ich disappeared and was doing fine. This morning I went to feed him and his stomach is all bloated up. It is huge.

Does anyone know what this is or how to treat it?

Thanks

Tom

Has he been pooping? Maybe the meds got him constipated. You can treat constipation with 1tbsp Epsom salt/5gal. For future reference, you don't really need meds to treat "ich". You can do FW dips & large water changes & raised temps in the QT.

I have not used any meds to treat ich. I used hypo salinity. I am think I am going to try the epsom salt idea.

Any other thoughts?

for starters STOP feeding....hypo salinty can cause stomach/intestinal swelling...feed only 2-3 week for QT...increase temp to min 82 degrees and start to raise salinity to level of main tank...if feeding FD krill switch to frozen/silversides...vary the diet
good luck

Thanks for the information. As of this morning he is still alive and seems to be doing okay. He does not look as bloated and seems to have more energy. Last night was the first time I tried to feed him since I first posted and he ate. I will start to raise the salinity back up tonight. Hopefully he will pull through.

Thanks for the help

There is a Fish Disease Treatment Forum here on RC. You can get experienced and valuable advice from there.

Epsom salts is Magnesium sulfate. Magnesium and sulfates are already in our tanks because they are a normal part of sea water. The Epson salt treatment has been a recommendation for treating freshwater fishes, but does nothing for saltwater fishes. Saltwater fishes are already in epsom salts.

Hyposalinity is a gentle treatment, but it has to be done with a lot of diligent effort:
1) Using a refractometer to control salinity;
2) Using the right salinity to stress the parasite;
3) Controlling pH (low salinity water is not buffered well and pH can shift easily, downward); and
4) Constantly monitoring QT conditions.

This is a good reference:

After being sure you are running the treatment properly, after being sure you are controlling all aspects of the QT, then the bloating can be an intestinal problem, including but not limited to infection or parasitic attack. But, first eliminate all water condition concerns.

If you provide a photo with the tank water tests and detailed info (foods you feed, appearance of excrement, tank size, tank age, etc.) in the Fish Disease Treatment Forum, someone there should be able to give good advice.

The fish is still alive and doing okay. It looks like he finally did poop. His belly is not swollen anymore. I did end up treating the tank with meracyn 2. He still is not swimming very much and has become quite thin. The only way I can get him to eat is by hand feeding him. I did bring the salinty back up to normal levels. I have been doing daily water changes and monitoring PH. All water parameters are good. It looks like everyday he is becoming a little more active. I am going to continue to keep up maintaining good water quality and feed him many small meals a day. It looks like he is very malnourished from his ordeal and hopefully he will pull through with good food and water quality.

Thanks for everyones help.
