Trivia question of the day (reef related)

Luiz Rocha

Salty Dog
What is the ocean's volume? I just want to run a small experiment here as to what people think the volume is, so please don't google :) I will post the answer in a bit.

No idea, but I've often wondered...but never googled it for some reason. I'm sure the answer will make even the biggest tank look like a nano.

*Edit* okay, just googled it...that's a lot of zeros.

You want it in cubic kilometers, cubic miles or cubic centimeters? Ok, I will shut up cause I know this.

Jim

Oh finally somebody guessed! Needless to say, you are far. One of the biggest indoor tanks in the world (the Whale Shark tank at the GA Aquarium) has 6 million gallons, so I think gallons may not be the best unit to guess :)

Since most people here are from the US let's make it cubic miles. Here is a clue:

1 cubic mile = 1,101,117,147,429 gallons

So, how many cubic miles in the oceans?

Naw I want others to suffer till you tell them. I will say it increases by around 1 cubic meter per year.....

Jim

Approximately 322 million cubic miles, now try converting it to gallons:

1 cubic mile = 1,101,117,147,429 gallons

Mind blowing

Real question is how big of a skimmer would you need?

here's one of many
