Trying to build magnetic doors home made stand please help

As title states, I built my stand, its strong, sturdy, holding the tank water etc.

Now I'm trying to build magnetic doors. I took plywood cut it a little larger than the opening on my stand, then took some 2 inch framing and cut it out then glued it framing in the plywood.

Next I took these 2 magnets used to hold cabinet doors closed and put one side on cabinet other side on back of panel I made. The magnets weren't strong enough the panel dropped.

I removed those magnets got magnetic tape put it around opening and screwed it in so it doesn't pull away when I pull door off. This holds better but door still slides down and falls.

Does anyone have any guidance to make magnetic door panels? I figure this will be nice easy way for easy access to parts of sump underneath as needed. Thanks in advance!

Look into "rare earth" or ceramic magnets. They are super strong.

Thank you... I'm looking at those and thinkung how to attach, also what kind of metal to attach to back of panel so everything will line up

These have counter sunk holes. So drill a shallow hole the size of the outer diameter and only as deep as the magnet is tall, then put it in the hole and screw it in place. Voila! Flush mount. I personally would epoxy or silicone them in place also. They are quite fragile and crack really easy.

Btw, I wouldnt put magnets on both the door and the stand, you may never get them apart. Also, watch your fingers, I've seen the magnets snap together with a finger between and a blacked nail that fell off later... safety 1st!

I use magnets to hold my door for my canopy. Used 2 on each side and holds it on pretty good. Got them at local hardware store. Comes with magnet and metal playe

This is what I did. Add a small strip of wood at the bottom inside of the door, to hold the weight of the door. Use the magnets to hold the door against the stand.

I did the same on one stand, wood ledge holds it up, magnets stuck closed. On another i used little legs instead of a strip to clear over some paneling into the bottom shelf.

Excellent tip!! Solve the weight issue I was worried about on the stand for my 360. :thumbsup:

You used rare earth magnets at top? What did you use for metal plate on "door" so that it will hold to the magnets?

Also what drill bit did you use to drill the hole properly to counter sink the rare earth magnets?

You can use a paddle bit or forschner bit to drill for magnets.

Most any ledger or channel will not only help stop sliding but will also work as a guide to place doors on level.

I agree those rare earth mags are something to be careful of, first time playing w/ them was a knuckle buster!

The bottom has one magnet per corner, the top has two magnets per corner. I used a burr bit on a die-grinder to countersink, just needed something quick since its out of sight. I used epoxy to hold the magnets in place. I have magnets on both the stand and door, with the correct pole orientation. These are small neodymium magnets I got on Amazon.
