ULNS Salt for SPS

Folks,

Given the specific ALK requirements of a ULNS system like ZEOvit, I'm curious what salt brands everyone is using in their tanks? I have been using RBS, but thinking of a change...

The only other salt I've seen with the proper ALK is Get Tanked salt. Whats everyone else been using?

Cheers,
L3

You can use any quality salt, Alk/cal changes all the hence you have to add them daily.

Nothing special about zeovit, its just a bacterial filtration like any other. i really doubt the salt going to make any difference to the bacteria.

I don't see how the Dkh of the salt matters that much, considering how much people dose on a daily basis to maintain Dkh, it would make more sense to maintain a dosing scheme to achieve the Dkh you want.

Unless you are doing a huge water change it won't matter that much in my opinion.

What are the specific ALK requirements for a ULNS?

The specifics under the Zeo sytem are 6.5-7.5 dKH. I had been using Reef Crystals which was clocking in at 11. My understanding is that with ZEOvit, higher ALK causes RTN.

Would love to change salts, as I'm not really impressed with RBS, which I've been using for almost a year...

Then try Tropic Marin Pro Reef, that stuff is extremely clean and when I was using it the batches I was making were testing around 8dkh.

only the reef crystals and perhaps IO are notorious for high alk (as high as 13 reported in some buckets)
if you buy TMPR, red sea coral pro, coral life, even seachem should give you the low alk that you need.

Tropic Marin Pro is low in Mg (below 1200) in all the many buckets I have tested. If you try to add Mg to it there is alot of precipitation due to the fact that they use chelated calcium.

Brightwells Neo Marine salt is right on the money at 7 dkh from what I have tested (Lamotte Alk and Elos Kits)

D&D might be good as well for you.

I use Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salts, for me this comes through with a low enough alk that I do not have to change my 2 part dosing schedule by using it. For ease of mind this allows me to stay within normal zeovit parameters without a jump in alk the day of changing water. I choose my salt based on my requirements for keeping the levels I prefer, I do not change or choose my dosing schedule by salt choice, if that makes sense...lol

Did DD fix the brown residue issue yet? The one bucket I had didn't disolve well and it coated my container, heater and pump with a thick brownness. I heard they were working of fixing this though.

I just mixed up a batch of Tropic Marins Bio-Actif and so far I really like it. Although I dn't test for K or CA the alk is 7.5 and the MG is at 1200 (ZEO recommends 1200-1300). I was impressed on how quickly the salt dissolved, it took only 30 minutes to become very clear. I also run a ZEO tank and will post my results in the near future.

I too just mixed my first 15 gallons Tropic Marine Bio-Active and it was amazing how quickly it dissolved and became crystal clear. I am also running a zeo tank:thumbsup:

im using reef crystals and am going to change to tropic marine pro- my alk fro this reef crystals batch is 12.8 my old one was 11.8- big difference : / so after doing a 12 gallon water change on a 100 gallon system which holds 9.0- the alk went up to 10.8. which is weird so now i have my reactor tuned down and am trying to get rid of reef crystals.
