Our aquarists club owns "The Trap" manufactured by Ultralite Reef Products of Derby, CT.

The fish trap's door is weighted by a pair of magnets that appear to have been covered with a plastic when manufactured. My concern is that the plastic cover has been compromised and the magnet has rusted quite a bit. The magnetism is still very strong, but no amount of cleaning will get rid of the rust - which in fact sticks quite nicely to the magnets as it is ferrous...
Is this thing safe to use in my reef tank with corals, fish, inverts, etc. when it is leaching some rust into the water???
Expert answer?

I have one but it is made out of acrylic. No magnets whatsoever.

No weight on the door? Silver looking thing that the monofilament is attached to? That's the magnet on the one we have...

Maybe I got a defect one. No weight. Just a piece of acrylic that slides up and down. I purchased it from Marine Depot. I haven't used it yet.
