UV glass

slacker
Anyopne have a fixture for parts or a piece of Uv protective glass I can buy i need like 8" X 4.5" piece to shield my HQI bulb

called 3-4 places they keep talking about lamination but say it will not be heat resistant :(

anyone ever had to DIY and buy UV glass? help me out plz

"UV Glass" is Quartz, not silica based, and is used in UV Filters and the like, because the Quartz glass allows most UV Radiation to pass through. If you just need to replace the splash guard on a MH Fixture, I believe standard float glass will do. I would not get it tempered however.

well, here is the full jist of it...

I replaced Coralife HQI bulb with Ushio.. Put glass sleave over the bulb the way it was before...

Everything in my tank DIed within 4 hours...

I called Coralife today and spoke with engeneer that swore that Coralife HQI bulbs do NOT produce UV due to their UNIQUE design (which they failed to indicate in their instructions) and other bulbs will not work...

So I need a UV shield

OY!
I would contact PFO or someone that makes fixtures for HQI bulbs, see if they can get you replacement glass to fit. Should just be standard float glass, however. I can't think of any 'special' glass that would be needed to _block_ UV. I know you need special glass to allow it (and one would think....)

Thanx

i'll try and see if i can get in contact with someone and doublecheck, I think i have some glass at home i'll try and cut to size

I'm not buying that it's a UV problem.
Typically Coralife bulbs just suck eggs so it might be that getting a real bulb in there is shocking the system with too much light.

Why not tempered glass for a UV shield?

I've shattered several of 'em myself, and it's far easier to clean up a few slabs of plate glass, than getting millions of little pieces out of the tank.

LOL! I agree w/ you on the coralife bulbs (pretty much all their products?), but if they did spike the recipe so it was weighted a certain way.. there would definitely be an adjustment.

Are we talking about the little Double-ended Metal Halide bulbs? 250Watt? Look like a pretzel stick and has contacts on both ends? Not the big honking shaving-cream-can sized mogul socket bulbs, right?

yea its HQi double ended. The only reason I am still on the Uv theory is the Lion fish not looking very good, but who kows, gonna try and do 20% water change tomorrow and install some glass. Also bought some aluminum window screen stuff, was gonna cut it in squares and put 3-4 on top of each other and teke 1 of at a time each week or so. I that kind of sreen ok?

Well, if you are using a traditional double ended HQI bulb, then I would not run it w/o glass sheilding. UV is incredibly damaging, as you have seen. I had the outer sleeve on one of my HQI's pop (mogul style 400W HQI), and the tank was exposed on 1 (of 4) lamps for about 2 hours... I lost several acro's, a large stylo colony, a couple monti's, and the skin on the topside of my 2 herbivores (the more active fishes in my tank) was peeling for weeks. If there's 100% coral mortality at this point, then you don't need light in there.
I'd watch the lion, it might make it (skin peeling on the top? Fins look ragged?), but find a flourescent fixture, or something, until you can get the MH issue resolved. The Double ended lamps running a traditional bulb (Ushio) will absolutely kick out a ton of UV light, and will damage your tank. Wether you choose tempered glass or standard, is up to you.

Yup got my old 80W pc running on there, just warried about the clam, it hasn't opened since but still alive
